Read the full product descriptionFrederick DuCane Godman’s Insecta Diptera Pl 09 (1879) is a quintessential Victorian zoological illustration devoted to the order Diptera—the “true flies,” which encompasses familiar groups such as houseflies and mosquitoes. Created at the height of the 19th century’s passion for discovery and classification, the plate unites scientific exactitude with elegant draughtsmanship. Each specimen is rendered with calm clarity against a clean white field, inviting close study of wings, antennae, and segmented bodies while preserving the restrained beauty that defined the era’s natural history art.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of Godman’s plate, produced with archival pigment inks. Choose from acid-free, heavyweight paper or richly textured artist’s cotton canvas. The Unique Maps Co. preserves the original proportions of the plate and offers a range of sizes to suit your space, along with optional framing, matting, and UV-protective glazing. Personalization is available—add a discreet caption, dedication, or date line—plus custom sizing on request, ensuring the print harmonizes perfectly with your interior.
Godman was an influential English naturalist and collector whose life’s work helped catalogue the biodiversity of the 19th century. Renowned for his role in major scientific collaborations and for building significant collections, he championed the marriage of rigorous fieldwork with carefully executed illustration. His plates were designed to be both instructive and aesthetically refined, a balance that remains deeply appealing to contemporary collectors.
This plate focuses on Diptera, a cornerstone order in entomology notable for its single pair of wings and extraordinary ecological diversity. As with the best Victorian scientific art, the composition is systematic: multiple specimens are arranged for ready comparison, allowing students, scholars, and enthusiasts to discern differences in wing venation, body proportions, and distinctive patterning. Published in 1879, it captures a pivotal moment when illustrated taxonomy expanded public understanding of the natural world and provided an enduring visual record for biodiversity studies.
Visually, the print is distinguished by its restrained, natural palette—white ground with gentle washes of yellow and beige, and occasional warm orange accents—chosen to emphasize morphological detail without distraction. Fine, deliberate linework and subtle shadowing suggest depth, while the crisp spacing of the figures lends an airy, orderly elegance. It’s a compelling focal point for libraries, studies, and living spaces alike—equally at home in classic interiors or modern, minimalist rooms—offering both scientific intrigue and timeless decorative grace.
Beautiful as a gift for naturalists, teachers, and curious minds, this refined natural history print suits Christmas, birthdays, graduations, or a housewarming—especially fitting for anyone who appreciates Victorian science, entomology, or the quiet beauty of well-observed detail.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.
I source original, rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.
My maps are printed on acid-free archival matte (not glossy) paper that feels very high quality and almost like card. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/200gsm. It's perfect for framing.
I print with Epson ultrachrome giclée UV fade resistant pigment inks - some of the best inks you can find.
I can also make maps on canvas, cotton rag and other exotic materials.

Map ageing
I have been asked hundreds of times over the years by customers if they could buy a map that looks even older.
Well, now you can, by selecting Aged before you add a map to your basket.
All the product photos you see on this page show the map in its Original form. This is what the map looks like today.
If you select Aged, I will age your map by hand, using a special and unique process developed through years of studying old maps, talking to researchers to understand the chemistry of aging paper, and of course... lots of practice!
If you're unsure, stick to the Original colour of the map. If you want something a bit darker and older looking, go for Aged.
