The title refers to the execution of Hans Hermann von Katte, the Prussian officer associated with Crown Prince Frederick’s attempted flight from his father, King Frederick William I. Katte was executed in 1730, and Frederick was compelled to witness the event from confinement. That history lends particular force to Mucha’s use of the window: it is both the picture’s principal source of light and a barrier separating the figures from the public event beyond. The subject belongs to a nineteenth-century taste for emotionally charged episodes drawn from European history, treated not simply as records of the past but as scenes of conflict, duty and private distress.
A closer look
The composition is built around an exchange between enclosure and distance. Broad areas of dim wall hold the foreground figures in a compressed, almost theatrical space, while the window opens a narrow passage into the world outside. Its small hexagonal panes impose a geometric grid across the view, fragmenting the crowd beyond and sharpening the contrast between the ordered interior and the less distinct activity in the open air.
The standing figure provides the scene’s strongest gesture. His outstretched arm cuts across the otherwise vertical construction, directing attention towards the window without resolving precisely what is being indicated. Across from him, the second figure’s inclined posture is quieter and more inward: attention is concentrated upon the event below, and subtle shading around the face suggests concern or contemplation rather than spectacle. The difference between the two poses gives the scene its tension—one expansive and authoritative, the other constrained by observation.
Smaller furnishings deepen the historical setting. At the lower right, a turned chair with a decorative back is partly concealed by patterned cloth. The dense ornament of this fabric offers a rare moment of visual richness within the subdued room, its folds and repeated motifs set against the smooth wall. Highlights caught on faces, clothing and window panes establish a measured progression from the darker interior to the pale exterior, while the indistinct crowd beyond creates a second, more distant narrative plane.
Context and significance
Mucha is most closely associated with the flowing contours, ornamental borders and poised female figures of his mature Art Nouveau designs. Exécution de Katte presents a markedly different aspect of his name: sombre, narrative and concerned with historical psychology rather than decorative display. There is no prominent advertising text or emphatic graphic slogan. Instead, the design depends upon figure placement, controlled light and the charged relationship between an unseen event and those forced to observe it.
The result is less a literal representation of an execution than a study of witnessing. Much of the decisive action remains outside the room and beyond the immediate field of vision. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
