Several flowers turn in different directions around the upper stem, their broad, softly modelled petals encircling deeper golden cups. Long green leaves rise beside them in tapering blades, while the warm, pale ground leaves the plant almost entirely free of distraction.
The plate belongs to Choix des plus belles fleurs, a publication whose title—“Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—neatly expresses the balance at the heart of Redouté’s practice. Botanical structures had to remain recognisable, yet each specimen was also arranged with the refinement of a floral portrait. Celebrated for his flower studies, the French artist worked within an early nineteenth-century culture in which botanical knowledge, aristocratic collecting and decorative art frequently overlapped. His luminous colour and precise observation made such plates useful as records of plant form while giving them an appeal far beyond strictly scientific circles.
A closer look
The densest activity occurs near the top of the composition. Open flowers overlap without becoming confused: some face outward, exposing their circular cups, while others tilt into profile and reveal the slender depth of the trumpet. Their colour is not uniform. Pale lemon petals deepen towards richer yellow centres, with restrained touches of orange warming the innermost parts. Fine contours keep the separate petals legible, while delicate shading lends them a faint translucency and conveys their gently folded surfaces.
Below the flower heads, the composition becomes quieter and more linear. The smooth stem acts as a central support, accompanied by narrow leaves whose subtle veining and shifts from dark to light green give them volume. A partly closed bud introduces another stage in the plant’s cycle, setting compact form against the fully opened narcissi above. The arrangement’s vertical movement is carefully judged: the flowers provide a broad, many-pointed crown, while the foliage narrows towards the lower margin.
Redouté’s use of negative space is as important as the plant itself. The uncluttered beige field isolates each silhouette, making small changes in contour conspicuous—from the curling edge of a petal to the pointed tip of a leaf. At the foot of the plate, the subject is identified in both French and botanical Latin: “Narcisses à plusieurs fleurs” on the left and “Narcissus tazetta” on the right. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
