Ernest Godfrinon’s Vieux Système ‘t Wit Stoopke, dated 1907, turns a beverage advertisement into an intimate scene of sociability. Four figures gather closely around a small table, where glasses, vessels and a compact bag form the still centre of an otherwise animated exchange. One figure passes a drink to another, drawing the eye towards the shared glass. Warm orange, tobacco brown and soft beige give the interior a mellow, aged character, while the shallow space presses the company forward, as though the gathering were unfolding just beyond the picture plane.

The poster belongs to the richly decorative culture of Belgian commercial printmaking at the beginning of the twentieth century. Advances in colour printing and illustration had enabled advertising to combine fine pictorial detail with immediate graphic impact: products could be promoted not only through names and slogans, but through atmosphere, anecdote and recognisable social rituals. Here, rather than isolating the drink as an object, Godfrinon associates it with hospitality and good company. The title itself, with its reference to an “old system”, reinforces the work’s deliberately traditional air.

A closer look

The table provides the composition’s visual and social anchor. Hands, faces and glasses converge around its surface, giving a simple act of serving the dramatic clarity of a small stage scene. Delicate highlights glint on the glassware against the predominantly matt, earthy palette. Clothing introduces further texture: folded blouses, bonnets and darker outer garments are described with careful lines and softly modulated colour, allowing each figure to remain distinct without disturbing the scene’s tonal unity.

Godfrinon enriches the advertisement with domestic details that are easy to overlook. A wall clock appears at the upper left, accompanied by framed pictures on the muted wall. To the right, kitchen or pantry objects suggest a practical, well-used interior rather than a formal drinking establishment. These modest furnishings establish a sense of routine and familiarity; the drink is presented as part of everyday communal life.

The most engaging incidental figure sits at the lower right: a striped cat stationed beside a bowl. Its low placement extends the composition below the tabletop and balances the clustered human figures above. It also introduces a note of gently observed humour. Throughout the scene, overlaps between bodies and furniture create closeness, while small areas of open wall prevent the arrangement from becoming crowded. The result is asymmetric but carefully poised, with darker browns defining the figures against a paler, softly diffused background.

Context and significance

Commercial posters of this period often borrowed the descriptive richness of genre painting, using narrative to make a product memorable. Vieux Système ‘t Wit Stoopke follows that approach closely: its persuasive force lies less in forceful typography than in the convivial world constructed around the beverage. The scene’s rustic setting, historical-looking dress and subdued colours create an impression of established custom, continuity and trust.

Godfrinon’s design rewards attention beyond its advertising purpose. Seen from a distance, it reads as a warm knot of figures around a table; examined more closely, it opens into a finely observed domestic episode of reflective glass, patterned fur, folded fabric and quietly expressive gesture. That combination of commercial directness and narrative detail gives the poster its enduring visual interest.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
