Dransy’s 1932 poster alambo. Vin aux fruits turns a fruit wine advertisement into a burst of theatrical movement. A smiling, barefoot figure advances from the left in a striped yellow-and-green wrap, leaning towards an overflowing blue bowl of fruit and the bottle rising from it. Above, the name “SALAMBO” stretches across the composition in emphatic red capitals, while oranges, yellows and deep fruit tones flare against a creamy beige ground.

Created within the expanding visual culture of early twentieth-century commercial advertising, the poster belongs to a period when artists were helping brands establish identities through instantly recognisable lettering, colour and character. Dransy, a French artist active across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, uses the economy required of street advertising: the product, brand name and mood are grasped almost at once. Yet the treatment also reflects the era’s taste for exoticised promotional imagery, in which costume and stylised character were employed to suggest festivity and sensory abundance rather than to document a particular culture or place.

A closer look

The figure supplies the composition’s principal rhythm. One arm reaches towards the fruit while bent knees and bare feet suggest a dance-like step into the foreground. Large earrings, colourful ankle bracelets and sharply defined, radiating hair extend the silhouette in several directions. Even the small blush on the cheeks contributes to the animated expression. Clear contours keep these details legible, while dark shadows and bright highlights give the otherwise flat graphic forms an energetic snap.

On the right, the decorative blue bowl acts as both counterweight and secondary focal point. Its cool colour stands apart from the poster’s dominant oranges, reds and yellows, while its patterned surface introduces a compact ornamental note. Grapes, bananas and rounded citrus fruits press upwards and spill over the rim, surrounding a dark bottle whose label includes the name “Bardinet”. Rather than presenting the drink in isolation, Dransy embeds it within a lavish arrangement of colour, ripeness and plenty.

The typography is integral to this visual choreography. “SALAMBO” occupies the upper field in broad red lettering, commanding attention before the eye drops to the smaller but still assertive words “VIN aux FRUITS”. The alternation between capitals and the reduced “aux” creates a simple hierarchy, allowing the brand and the nature of the drink to register separately. Below, the diagonal energy of the figure and the swelling fruit bowl prevent the text from feeling detached from the illustration. Dransy’s signature appears discreetly in the lower-right corner.

Context and significance

Posters of this kind were designed for rapid public recognition, and their effectiveness depended upon reducing an advertising message to a few forceful elements. Here, warm saturated colour establishes appetite and gaiety, the pale background preserves clarity, and the asymmetrical pairing of figure and bowl keeps the scene in motion. The result is characteristic of a moment when commercial art was becoming a sophisticated field of graphic invention: products were no longer merely named, but surrounded by memorable personalities, palettes and visual narratives. Dransy’s poster remains particularly engaging for the precision with which illustration and lettering are made to perform the same task—turning a bottle of fruit wine into an exuberant spectacle.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
