Continua a leggereIn Plate 91 from Choix des plus belles fleurs, published in 1827, Pierre-Joseph Redouté arranges a luxuriant pink rose, clustered buds and serrated foliage against an open, warm beige ground. The fully opened flower occupies the visual centre: its petals shift from pale, luminous pink at the edges to deeper rose tones within the densely folded heart. Around it, darker leaves, thorned stems and buds at several stages of development turn a single botanical specimen into a carefully paced composition.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for uniting botanical scrutiny with exceptional decorative refinement. His career extended across a period of profound political change in France, from the final years of the ancien régime through the Revolution, Empire and Restoration. Yet his floral studies retain a remarkable composure. Choix des plus belles fleurs belongs to the mature phase of his career, when decades of close observation had given his work its characteristic balance of precision, clarity and grace.
A closer look
The rose is constructed through minute tonal transitions rather than emphatic outlines. Fine markings follow the curl and crease of individual petals, while highlights along their upper surfaces create an impression of soft illumination. The outer petals spread broadly, allowing the bloom to appear open and weighty; towards the centre, the forms become smaller, darker and more tightly interlocked. This gradual compression gives the flower convincing volume without disturbing the delicacy of the plate.
Redouté surrounds the blossom with contrasting botanical structures. At the lower left, sharply toothed leaves are crossed by a network of slender veins, their rich greens deepening where one leaf overlaps another. A narrow stem along the left edge carries clearly articulated thorns, a modest but important reminder of the plant’s less ornamental character. To the right, unopened buds remain predominantly green, while others reveal faint blushes of pink at their tips. Their sequence suggests the rose’s development from tightly enclosed bud to expansive bloom.
A small yellow flower above the rose provides an unexpected point of brightness, distinct from the dominant relationship between pink and green. The generous unworked ground keeps each stem, bud and leaf legible, while also heightening the sense that these living forms have been temporarily isolated for study. Along the lower edge appears the identification “Rosa Indica Grande Indienne”, with “Borsini.” visible at the lower right. Such lettering anchors the elegant arrangement within the classificatory world of botanical illustration.
Context and significance
Redouté’s reputation rests on his ability to reconcile two demands that do not always sit easily together: the descriptive requirements of botanical study and the aesthetic pleasures of flower painting. Here, details such as leaf venation, thorns and successive bud forms offer information about the plant’s structure, while the asymmetrical rise of the stems and the measured distribution of colour make the plate satisfying as a composition in its own right.
The result is neither a crowded bouquet nor a detached diagram. The rose retains the irregularities and specific textures of a closely observed specimen, but its placement has the poise of a formal portrait. That union of scientific attention and cultivated elegance explains why Redouté’s work has continued to engage botanists, gardeners and admirers of floral art long after its original publication.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
