Its flowers appear at contrasting stages of development: a large pink bloom opens towards the upper left, while a smaller, more compact red rose occupies the upper right and tightly closed buds gather below. The asymmetry gives the plant a natural, upward movement, yet every leaf, thorny stem and curling petal remains lucidly ordered.
Redouté was among the defining botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for uniting scientific observation with an unusually graceful sense of composition. His flower studies belong to a culture increasingly absorbed by botany, horticulture and the classification of cultivated and exotic plants. Rather than treating the specimen as a dry diagram, he made its identifying structures visually eloquent: the direction of a stem, the serrated edge of a leaf and the transition from bud to full flower all become part of the design.
A closer look
The principal rose is built from many softly ruffled petals, their colour deepening from pale blush at the outer edges towards a warmer pink within the flower’s folded centre. It is presented at a slight angle rather than face-on, allowing individual petals to overlap and turn back upon themselves. Across the composition, this subtle tonal modelling creates volume without sacrificing the clarity expected of botanical illustration.
To the upper right, the darker rose forms a compact counterweight. Its richer crimson-red petals curl inward, producing a denser silhouette beside the airy pink flower. Beneath them, the foliage spreads through the centre in overlapping groups. Some leaves are viewed broadly, exposing their fine networks of veins; others tilt away or disappear behind neighbouring stems. Their varied greens prevent the foliage from becoming a uniform mass, while sharply described edges preserve each leaf as a distinct botanical feature.
The lower section rewards particularly close attention. A cluster of unopened buds introduces pointed forms and touches of red among the green sepals, recording the plant before flowering as carefully as it records the mature bloom. Fine hairs can be discerned along the young stems, while restrained highlights and shadows articulate their rounded surfaces. The surrounding warm beige remains almost entirely empty. This generous negative space isolates the specimen, but it also makes the branching structure easy to follow from its lower stem to the two contrasting flowers above. Along the lower edge, the Latin title identifies the rose, linking the decorative composition to the classificatory purpose of botanical plates.

Working at a time when rare and cultivated flowers attracted intense interest, he developed a visual language in which specimens could be studied and admired simultaneously. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
