Around it, compact crimson buds rise among serrated green leaves, while a thorned stem descends through the generous cream ground. The asymmetry gives the plant a natural, growing rhythm without sacrificing the clarity expected of a scientific plate.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower illustrators working in early nineteenth-century France. Celebrated particularly for his studies of roses and lilies, he brought together close botanical observation and an unusually refined sense of arrangement. His career unfolded within the cultivated world of Parisian gardens, botanical publishing and court patronage, where accurately recorded plants could also be admired as objects of rarity and taste. In an age when illustrated botanical books were essential to the description and classification of species and varieties, his plates made scientific information immediately legible while retaining the individuality of each specimen.
A closer look
The open rose commands attention through the density of its layered petals. Redouté avoids a hard outline around the flower, instead building its form through delicate tonal changes: darker folds gather towards the centre, while the outer petals loosen into blush pink and near-cream. This subtle modelling gives the bloom volume without disturbing the plate’s light, polished character. The unopened buds at the upper right provide a vivid counterpoint. Their deeper red surfaces and rounded forms record earlier stages of flowering, allowing the branch to be read almost as a sequence of development.
Below, the foliage creates a more angular visual structure. Leaflets spread outward in alternating clusters, their toothed margins crisply distinguished against the pale background. Fine veins branch across each surface, while shifts from fresh green to deeper olive suggest leaves turning at different angles to the light. The central stem is comparatively spare and direct. Its small, sharply described thorns interrupt the otherwise graceful descent and remind us that this is not an idealised bouquet but a carefully observed plant.
The surrounding blank space is integral to the composition. With no garden setting, vase or decorative border, every botanical feature remains easy to examine: the attachment of bud to stem, the spacing of leaflets, the contrast between smooth petals and serrated foliage. Along the lower edge, the Latin title anchors the specimen in the classificatory language of botanical illustration, set apart from the plant itself rather than allowed to compete with it.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
