August Macke’s Our street in gray, painted in oil in 1911, turns an ordinary urban thoroughfare into a loosely articulated rhythm of façades, pedestrians and passing traffic. Buildings press in from either side, directing the eye along the pale, receding street, while a brown horse and yellow-covered carriage command the centre foreground. Although grey determines the atmosphere, it is far from uniform: blue roofs, muted greens, earthen browns and occasional orange accents animate the scene beneath a heavy, changeable sky.

Macke was among the leading figures of German Expressionism and a prominent participant in Der Blaue Reiter, the progressive artistic association that emerged in Munich in 1911. This was a period in which artists across Europe were loosening the connection between observed colour and natural appearance. In Macke’s work, modern life—streets, parks, shop windows and people at leisure—became material for a more decorative and emotionally charged art. Here, the familiar street is not recorded with strict architectural precision; instead, simplified forms and independent patches of colour create an experience of movement, weather and everyday activity.

A closer look

The composition unfolds horizontally, yet its strongest pull is into depth. Dark buildings form irregular wings at the left and right, while the roadway narrows towards the centre, threading between scattered figures. Macke does not labour over individual identities. The pedestrians are compressed into dark, almost silhouetted shapes, their coats and hats registering as brisk marks against the lighter ground. This economy gives the street its pulse: figures appear to cross, pause or walk away without interrupting the broader movement of the composition.

At the centre, the horse-drawn carriage provides both a visual anchor and a flash of warmth. Its wheels are only lightly indicated, while the yellow cover stands out against the subdued architecture and grey-blue sky. The horse’s brown body connects with the warm earth tones distributed elsewhere across the street. On the left, a low reddish fence runs beside the road, its repeated uprights introducing a measured beat beneath the more irregular roofline above.

Small passages soften the urban structure. In the central distance, white strokes scattered among touches of green resemble flowering branches, lending the background a spring-like freshness without becoming botanically descriptive. The upper-left rooftops are built from broken areas of grey and blue rather than meticulous detail; nevertheless, variations in tone distinguish one plane from another. At the lower right, two dark-clad figures appear seated together, a quiet counterpoint to the pedestrians and carriage. Visible brushstrokes hold these disparate elements together, allowing sky, masonry, foliage and pavement to share the same painterly energy.

Context and significance

Our street in gray belongs to a decisive moment in Macke’s development and in early twentieth-century European painting more broadly. The year 1911 coincided with the formation of Der Blaue Reiter, whose artists challenged conventional naturalism and treated colour and form as expressive forces in their own right. Macke shared this experimental outlook, but his subjects often remained rooted in accessible scenes of contemporary existence. Rather than turning away from daily life, he reorganised it through colour.

That balance is particularly clear here. The street remains legible—with its carriage, passers-by, fences and closely packed houses—yet description continually gives way to pattern. Cool and warm tones are placed in active relation, figures become concise dark accents, and architectural space is flattened without losing its sense of recession. The result is neither a documentary street view nor an entirely abstract arrangement, but a vivid meeting point between the observed city and the new visual freedoms of German Expressionism.
