The U.S. Geological Survey was, by the 1940s, one of the world’s leading institutions for systematic landscape mapping, and this sheet reflects its disciplined, data-rich approach. During this period, USGS topographic work expanded significantly across the United States, supporting civil planning, engineering, conservation, and wartime geographic knowledge.
