Published in 1967 from survey work conducted in 1954, the USGS map titled “Central Lake” offers a finely observed topographical portrait of one of northern Michigan’s most alluring lake districts. At a scale of 1:62,500, it centers on Torch Lake and its surrounding communities, rendering the region with the crisp, utilitarian elegance characteristic of mid-century American government cartography. Contour lines, water features, roads, trails, and wooded areas are arranged with a clarity designed for serious use, yet the result is visually rich: a landscape of long glacial lakes, rolling ground, and intricate shorelines. The map captures a moment when this part of Michigan was increasingly prized for recreation, while still retaining the rural patterns of settlement and land use shaped by earlier transportation and timber economies.

The map was produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, an institution founded in 1879 and long regarded as one of the principal authorities on American geography, geology, and natural resources. USGS topographic sheets like this one were indispensable tools for engineers, planners, scientists, educators, and travelers, translating the land into a standardized visual language of elevation, hydrography, settlement, and access. Unlike decorative atlas maps, “Central Lake” belongs to a tradition of practical precision: every contour, road line, and shoreline is part of a national project to understand the terrain in measurable detail. Its understated design reflects the USGS ideal that good cartography should be both exact and legible, allowing the viewer to read the landscape almost as if standing within it.

Torch Lake dominates the composition, a long, narrow body of water celebrated for its exceptional clarity and striking blue-green tones. Formed by glacial action, it is one of Michigan’s largest inland lakes and has long been associated with boating, fishing, resort life, and summer cottages. Nearby Clam Lake and the connecting waterways emphasize the hydrological richness of the region, where lakes and streams form a network linking inland communities to larger bodies of water. The surrounding contours reveal the gentle but varied topography of the area, with slopes, ridges, and lowlands carefully marked. This attention to relief gives the map more than navigational value; it offers an interpretive view of how water, elevation, and settlement patterns shaped the region’s development.

The towns and communities shown—including Bellaire, Alden, and Eastport—anchor the map in the human geography of Antrim County and the greater Grand Traverse region. Bellaire, positioned near the Chain of Lakes, developed as a local center for commerce, agriculture, and later tourism. Alden, on the shore of Torch Lake, evokes the lakeside village culture that became increasingly important in northern Michigan during the twentieth century. Eastport, near the upper reaches of Torch Lake and close to Grand Traverse Bay, points toward the region’s broader connections with Lake Michigan. Roads and trails weave between these places, suggesting the gradual transformation of a rural landscape into a recreational destination while preserving evidence of older settlement routes and local economies.

Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan provide the broader geographical frame for the map, reminding the viewer that these inland lakes were never isolated from the larger Great Lakes world. The bay has been historically significant for transportation, fishing, trade, and regional commerce, helping shape the settlement of nearby towns and the movement of goods and people through northern Michigan. By the time of this map’s 1967 imprint, the area was entering a period of intensified development, conservation awareness, and recreational expansion. Shoreline properties, boating access, forest management, and environmental protection would all become increasingly important concerns. As a result, “Central Lake” is not merely a record of terrain; it is a snapshot of a cherished Michigan landscape at a pivotal moment in its modern history.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
