Continua a leggere“Mc Minnville Quadrangle” presents a finely observed portrait of McMinnville, Oregon, and its surrounding countryside at mid-century. Surveyed in 1957 and published with a 1958 imprint by the United States Geological Survey, the map belongs to the USGS’s celebrated 1:24,000 topographic series, a scale prized for its balance of regional breadth and local precision. Here, the city is set within the fertile landscape of the Willamette Valley, with roads, waterways, parks, rural holdings, and subtle elevation changes rendered in the disciplined visual language of federal cartography. The bold red treatment of the urban area gives McMinnville an immediate visual presence, while the surrounding terrain reveals the town’s close relationship with agriculture, water, and the valley floor.
The US Geological Survey brought a distinctive authority to maps such as this, combining field survey, aerial interpretation, and standardized symbology to produce documents of lasting scientific and historical value. By the 1950s, the USGS quadrangle had become an indispensable tool for engineers, planners, geologists, land managers, and travelers, offering a systematic record of the American landscape. This map’s crisp contour lines, road classifications, drainage patterns, and land-cover indications reflect that rigorous tradition. Its elegance lies not in ornament but in exactitude: every line is purposeful, every symbol part of a national cartographic language. For McMinnville, the result is both a practical geographic record and a quietly beautiful snapshot of place.
McMinnville itself appears at a fascinating moment in its development, before the Willamette Valley became internationally associated with vineyards and fine wine. The map records a landscape still strongly defined by farms, open tracts, small roads, and the modest footprint of a regional town. Today McMinnville is admired for its historic downtown and its place within one of America’s premier wine regions, but this quadrangle preserves an earlier geography, when the surrounding countryside had not yet been reshaped by later patterns of tourism, suburban growth, and viticulture. In that sense, the map is a valuable witness to the pre-boom Willamette Valley, showing the agricultural and settlement framework from which the modern region emerged.
The topographic character of the map is especially compelling, revealing the subtle rises, drainage courses, and lowland forms typical of western Oregon’s valley terrain. Contour lines trace the gentle relief around McMinnville, while water features, including sloughs and the broader Willamette River system, indicate the importance of drainage, seasonal wetlands, and riverine corridors in shaping the area. Roads and trails thread between town and countryside, suggesting patterns of movement tied to farms, local commerce, and nearby communities. Parks and open spaces add further texture to the composition, balancing the urban core with green and rural surroundings. The map’s coloration distinguishes developed areas, vegetation, and terrain with a clarity that remains visually striking.
As a historical document, “Mc Minnville Quadrangle” captures the region on the threshold of change. The late 1950s were a period of expanding infrastructure and postwar planning across Oregon, yet this map still conveys a landscape of measured growth, compact settlement, and strong rural identity. Its details invite close reading: the contrast between the red-highlighted city and the quieter countryside, the geometry of roads and parcels, the natural logic of watercourses, and the restrained contours of the valley. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Oregon, it offers more than location; it offers atmosphere. This is McMinnville before its later renown, precisely mapped at a moment when town, field, and river remained intimately connected.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.
For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.
Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
