Titled “McMinnville,” this 1926 United States Geological Survey map presents the McMinnville quadrangle of Oregon with the disciplined clarity and scientific authority that made USGS topographic mapping indispensable to twentieth-century America. At a scale of 1:62,500, it captures a richly varied portion of the northern Willamette Valley, where settlement, agriculture, transport, and terrain meet in a carefully measured landscape. McMinnville appears as the central populated place, surrounded by smaller towns, rural roads, railways, river corridors, and the undulating forms of the Oregon countryside. The map is both practical and evocative: a precise government survey document that now reads as a historical portrait of Yamhill County and its neighboring valleys during a formative period of regional growth.

The United States Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became the nation’s foremost authority on mapping terrain, water, mineral resources, and landforms. Its topographic sheets were created not merely for navigation, but for a broad civic purpose: land management, engineering, agriculture, resource assessment, and public planning. This McMinnville sheet belongs to that tradition, translating the landscape into a refined visual language of contour lines, gridded coordinates, hydrography, roads, railways, and place names. The design is understated yet highly informative, with color-coded terrain and crisp linework distinguishing relief, waterways, transportation routes, and settled areas. In an era before aerial and digital mapping became commonplace, such maps provided an authoritative framework for understanding the physical and human geography of the United States.

The geography shown here is quintessentially Willamette Valley: fertile lowlands, rolling hills, branching river systems, and small communities linked by roads and rail. McMinnville anchors the scene, while Dayton, Amity, Sheridan, Spring Valley, and Mission Bottom mark the broader rural network. The Yamhill River winds through the map, its course helping define patterns of settlement and cultivation, while the nearby Willamette River and Chehalem Valley situate the quadrangle within one of Oregon’s most important agricultural regions. Contour lines reveal subtle but significant elevation changes, tracing hills and valleys that shaped travel routes, farming decisions, and town development. The result is a layered image of a working landscape—orderly, productive, and intimately tied to water and terrain.

Historically, the 1926 date gives the map particular resonance. Oregon’s Willamette Valley was already long settled by this time, yet still visibly rural, with towns expanding along rail lines, river corridors, and farm roads. McMinnville, now known for its vineyards and historic downtown, appears here in an earlier phase of its development, embedded in a countryside of orchards, fields, and dispersed communities. Dashed lines indicating roads and railways show the infrastructure that connected agricultural producers to regional markets, while the placement of smaller communities preserves names and patterns of habitation that may have shifted, diminished, or grown dramatically in the century since. The map captures not a static wilderness, but a humanized landscape in transition.

As a topographic composition, the map’s appeal lies in its balance of precision and atmosphere. The grid gives the sheet a rational structure, while the contour lines lend it movement, rising and falling across the page to articulate Oregon’s gentle but complex relief. Rivers and valleys guide the eye naturally through the terrain, and the distribution of towns suggests the practical logic of settlement in relation to waterways, transportation, and cultivable land. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Oregon, this map offers more than location: it preserves a moment when the McMinnville area stood at the intersection of rural tradition, modern infrastructure, and geographic identity. It is a measured, elegant record of place at a pivotal time.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
