A Plan of the Parish of St. Mary Islington, issued in 1841, captures a pivotal moment as a once-rural Middlesex parish consolidated into the fabric of metropolitan London. Conceived for Samuel Lewis Junior’s Parochial History, this engraved plan foregrounds ecclesiastical district boundaries as the organizing logic of the emerging city. The cartography threads through Upper Street and Liverpool Road, across the new arteries of Pentonville Road and St. John Street, and into a constellation of Georgian squares—Myddelton, King’s, Wilmington—that signal urban intention as much as elegance. The result is a notably urban map: not merely a street diagram, but a textured portrait of jurisdiction, community, and spatial order during Islington’s rapid nineteenth-century transformation.

At the heart of the sheet lies its most telling narrative: the subdivision of the ancient parish into modern ecclesiastical districts to meet a surging population. Boundary lines slip between Barnsbury Street and Chapel Market, skirt along Liverpool Road, and pivot toward the commercial corridors by St. John Street and Tabernacle Street—ever attentive to church reach, relief, schools, and moral oversight. Surrounding parishes are acknowledged, underscoring how spiritual jurisdictions overlapped with civic responsibilities and rate-collecting. This is city mapping with a purpose: a legal and pastoral geography that reveals how Victorian authorities managed growth, charity, and order by drawing lines as carefully as streets were laid.

Topography and memory intersect around New River heritage and performance. Myddelton Square honors Sir Hugh Myddelton, the visionary behind the New River that once fed London’s thirst and gave Clerkenwell–Islington its hydraulic identity. Just west, Sadler’s Wells Road points to the celebrated theatre, a cultural landmark sustained by the springs near New River Head. The plan’s squares—King’s, Wilmington, Myddelton—read as green punctuation in the urban text, their formal geometry offsetting the bustle around Chapel Market. Even without theatrical flourishes, the layout implies waterworks, leisure, and improvement societies at close quarters, a unique metropolitan ecosystem where parochial care, performance, and infrastructure evolved together.

Street by street, the map articulates the parish’s social anatomy. Pentonville Road anchors the southern approach; Upper Street climbs into Islington proper; Liverpool Road channels produce and trade toward Chapel Market’s thriving stalls. Barnsbury Street marks the genteel northwest, its terraces signaling suburban aspiration, while St. John Street—historic route to Smithfield—funnels movement to the city’s mercantile heart. King’s Square and Wilmington Square suggest planned respectability; White Lion Street, Bury Street, and Providence Street allude to older lanes reoriented by growth. Even the names—Baltic, Bastwick, Baring—hint at commerce and capital. The plan is an urban conversation piece, where markets, squares, and missions coexist within meticulously drawn parochial frontiers.

The collaboration behind this map elevates it beyond local survey. Samuel Lewis Junior, renowned for parochial histories that distilled civic, ecclesiastical, and topographical detail, commissioned R. Creighton’s on-the-ground work to ensure precision at the scale of household and street. John Dower’s engraving brings that survey to life with fine line work and unambiguous district demarcations, hallmarks of mid-Victorian cartographic clarity. Together they produced a working document for clergy, reformers, and ratepayers—and a lasting chronicle for historians—showing Islington at the cusp of modernity. As a city map, it is notable for binding streets to institutions, and institutions to lived geography, portraying how London’s expansion was shaped, quite literally, by its parish lines.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving, anniversary or housewarming gift for someone from the areas covered by this map.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
