The US Geological Survey’s “Brenham” presents a finely measured portrait of south-central Texas, centered on Brenham and its surrounding communities at a scale of 1:62,500. Dated 1930 and carrying a 1937 imprint, this “advance” map captures the region through early twentieth-century survey work, before later decades transformed its roads, farms, and settlements. Its monochromatic design emphasizes clarity: roads, drainage lines, boundaries, and relief are carefully distinguished, while 20-foot contour intervals describe the low, gently rolling terrain characteristic of Washington County and neighboring areas. Rather than a decorative flourish, the map’s beauty lies in precision—an ordered, scientific rendering of a lived-in Texas landscape at a moment when rural networks and small towns still shaped the geography of daily life.

Brenham occupies the heart of the sheet, a town long associated with German-Texan settlement, agriculture, rail connections, and the civic life of Washington County. Around it appear communities and localities such as Chappell Hill, Independence, Pleasant Hill, Blue Hill, Piney Point, Spring Hill, Fairview, and Old Mill, each marking a node in the regional fabric of farms, churches, schools, roads, and creeks. Chappell Hill and Independence are especially resonant names in Texas history: both are tied to nineteenth-century settlement, education, and the memory of the Republic era. The map quietly preserves this layered human geography, showing not only prominent towns but smaller crossroads and rural places that might otherwise vanish from the broader historical record.

The topographic character of the sheet is subtle but revealing. With contour lines spaced at 20-foot intervals, the map shows a landscape neither mountainous nor flatly featureless, but one of shallow valleys, rounded divides, and creek-cut drainage. Mill Creek and numerous smaller watercourses thread across the terrain, explaining the placement of roads, settlements, and cultivated land. In this part of Texas, water shaped movement and agriculture as decisively as major highways did elsewhere: farmsteads clustered near reliable drainage, roads followed easier grades, and communities grew where crossings and uplands made sense. The result is a map that reads almost like a diagram of settlement ecology, connecting landform, water, transport, and habitation.

As a US Geological Survey production, the map belongs to a cartographic tradition that combined field observation, scientific rigor, and public utility. During the early to mid-twentieth century, USGS topographic sheets became essential tools for engineers, planners, military users, geologists, hydrologists, and local governments. The “advance” designation suggests a working stage in the publication process, issued to make geographic information available while refinements or final editions might still be pending. This lends the map a particular documentary interest: it is both authoritative and immediate, reflecting the government’s expanding commitment to systematic national mapping. Its disciplined linework and economical symbology embody the practical elegance of American scientific cartography.

Historically, the map offers a valuable snapshot of Brenham and its hinterland before the full impact of postwar highway expansion, suburban growth, and modern land-use change. Roads radiate across the countryside, but the pattern remains intimate and local, linking places such as Perry, County Line, Landrum, Cottonwood, Sweet Home, Jones, Bluff, and the approximated localities of Nelson and Blinker. These names evoke a rural world of dispersed settlement, cotton fields, pastures, creek bottoms, and market-town connections. For collectors drawn to Texas history, USGS mapping, or the geography of small-town America, this sheet is rich with quiet significance: it records the ordinary landscape with extraordinary care, preserving the contours of a region in transition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
