Its edges are sharply picked out against the surrounding glow, while narrow filaments curl through the centre and warmer plumes spread towards the upper right. The result is at once atmospheric and remarkably intricate: a small portion of a vast star-forming region rendered with an almost sculptural sense of depth.
The Lagoon Nebula lies about 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. The complete nebula measures approximately 55 light-years across and 20 light-years tall, yet this tightly framed observation covers only about four light-years. That contrast in scale is essential to the image: structures that resemble wisps, ridges and ribbons belong to a field extending across several light-years.
Hubble recorded the scene for its 28th anniversary in space. Although the Lagoon Nebula was first catalogued in 1654 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna, this close view brings the complexity of one small region into extraordinary relief.
A closer look
The central column provides the image with its strongest visual anchor. It rises into the brighter upper field, bordered by glowing yellow and orange material on one side and deeper crimson on the other. Around it, slender strands bend and overlap, sometimes sharply defined and elsewhere dissolving into haze. Small points of light punctuate the darker passages without interrupting the scale of the surrounding forms.
Colour and texture change markedly across the frame. The lower-left region is comparatively diffuse, washed in deep blue and violet, while the upper right is denser and more radiant, with orange-red plumes seeming to press outwards. Along the left edge, faint wisps drift into darker space. In the lower right, shadowed material gradually gives way to paler colour, creating the impression of looking through successive translucent layers.
At large scale, the finest contrasts become especially compelling: ribbon-like structures threaded through the central region; bright rims set against near-black recesses; and delicate transitions from cool blue to pale green, gold and crimson. These details give visual form to the official description of the Lagoon Nebula as a turbulent star-formation region, while preserving the strangeness of its interwoven light and darkness.
How this image was made
The observations were made with the Wide Field Camera 3 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope between 12 and 18 February 2018. Rather than attempting to encompass the entire Lagoon Nebula, Hubble concentrated on a field about four light-years across, revealing fine structures within a much larger nebula.
The finished image was released on 19 April 2018 as Hubble’s 28th-anniversary picture. Its close framing allows the nebula’s broad astronomical scale and its minute visual complexity to coexist: a multi-light-year landscape resolved into filaments, luminous margins and dark, sharply articulated forms.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
