kaffee-messmer-vintage-coffee-poster-by-karl-hofer-1900
Kaffee-Messmer Vintage Coffee Poster by Karl Hofer, 1900

Karl Hofer’s Kaffee-Messmer, created in 1900 for the coffee brand Messmer, turns the act of drinking into a remarkably concentrated piece of graphic theatre. A dark, stylised profile fills the left side of the composition, a small brown cup lifted towards vivid red lips, while an expanse of saturated yellow opens around the figure. With its emphatic contrasts, abbreviated forms and bold white lettering, the poster is designed to register quickly and remain in the memory.

The work belongs to a period in which commercial posters were becoming a prominent feature of urban visual culture. Businesses increasingly drew upon artists to give products a distinctive public identity, and Hofer’s design demonstrates how effectively advertising could combine direct communication with formal experiment. Made at the beginning of his career, Kaffee-Messmer also stands at an intriguing point between the decorative language of the late nineteenth century and the more simplified, forceful visual vocabulary of early modernism.

A closer look

The composition is notably asymmetric. Hofer presses the figure towards the left edge, allowing the unmodulated yellow ground to dominate the centre and right. Rather than constructing a recognisable interior, he removes almost every incidental detail: there is no table, furnishing or setting to distract from the profile, the raised hand and the branded cup. This deliberate flatness makes the relationship between silhouette and background especially strong. Dark brown and black contours appear almost cut out against the yellow, while the face retains just enough tonal modelling around the cheek to suggest volume.

Small accents enliven this broad arrangement of colour. The red lips form an intense point near the cup’s rim, and a circular earring punctuates the profile with a compact graphic shape. Fine grey trails of smoke rise above the face, introducing a rare element of movement into an otherwise firmly controlled design. The cup itself is carefully articulated: its rounded body and curling handle interrupt the figure’s angular outline, while the white words “MESSMER TÜRKISCH KAFFE” make the object carry the advertisement within the scene.

At the bottom, “KAFFEE-MESSMER” appears in large white capitals against a dark field. The lettering is not treated as a separate caption but as part of the composition’s architecture, anchoring the image and counterbalancing the luminous space above. A thin dark border further contains the bold blocks of yellow, brown, black and white. From a distance the poster reads through silhouette and colour; closer inspection reveals the economical touches—the smoke, earring, cheek shading and cup inscription—that give its simplified figure individuality.

Context and significance

Hofer’s career would span the transition from late nineteenth-century Symbolism to the increasingly modern sensibilities of twentieth-century German art. Here, however, his task is explicitly commercial. The poster does not narrate coffee’s production or present a crowded social scene; instead, it reduces the message to appetite, gesture and name. The cup raised close to the mouth makes consumption immediate, while the repeated Messmer wording ensures that figure and brand are visually inseparable.

Kaffee-Messmer is particularly revealing as an early example of artists shaping the language of consumer culture. Its power lies less in descriptive detail than in omission: a single profile, a single cup and a limited palette are made to carry the entire proposition. That economy gives the design its enduring visual sharpness, preserving the directness of an advertisement while showing Hofer already alert to the expressive possibilities of flattened space and simplified form.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
