Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s Joan of Arc. Before the Battle, created in 1908–1909, presents the medieval heroine not in the clamour of combat but in a charged interval of stillness. Joan occupies the centre of a tall, ascending composition, her raised hands, flowing garments and concentrated gaze framed by pale flowers and interlacing vegetation. Soft greens, muted blues and warm cream temper the drama of the subject, while Mucha’s sinuous line binds figure and setting into a single decorative rhythm.
Made during Mucha’s mature career, the work brings a historical and spiritual subject into the visual language for which the Czech artist became celebrated. His posters and graphic designs had helped define Art Nouveau at the turn of the twentieth century, particularly through their elongated figures, stylised plants and carefully orchestrated contours. Here, those familiar elements serve a more solemn purpose. Joan of Arc—soldier, visionary and enduring figure of French national history—is shown as both heroic and contemplative, with the title placing emphasis on resolve, faith and sacrifice rather than spectacle.
A closer look
Joan’s upright figure provides the composition with its principal axis. Her garments fall in long, softly modelled folds, their pale highlights standing out against the subdued, earthy background. The hands rise near the upper body in a gesture that reads as poised and inwardly focused, while the face remains serene but intent. Mucha avoids the emphatic action of conventional battle imagery; instead, the tension is concentrated in her expression and in the contrast between physical stillness and the conflict implied by the title.
The surrounding flora is not merely an ornamental border. Fine stems and leaves overlap the figure, and trailing strands of hair appear almost woven into the botanical forms. Delicate flowers gather near her feet, where a cool blue-green ground anchors the otherwise ethereal arrangement. Higher in the composition, pale floral patterns dissolve into the background, creating an atmospheric transition from denser lower detail to a lighter, more spacious upper field.
At the left, a faint martial silhouette can be discerned within the softer background passages. Its subdued presence allows Joan to remain dominant while quietly introducing the world of armour and warfare that awaits beyond her moment of contemplation. Throughout, narrow lines, gentle colour shifts and overlapping forms create depth without abandoning the flat, decorative coherence characteristic of Mucha’s graphic art.
Context and significance
Mucha was among the artists most closely associated with the flowering of Art Nouveau during the Belle Époque. Although his reputation was established through theatrical and commercial posters, his decorative vocabulary could readily accommodate allegory, history and spiritual themes. The long contour of a robe, the curve of a stem and the arrangement of a figure within an ornamental field were not treated as separate elements; each participated in the overall architecture of the design.
Joan of Arc. Before the Battle is especially compelling because it turns that decorative fluency towards psychological suspense. The muted palette and flowering setting might initially suggest tranquillity, yet the heroine’s unwavering gaze and the barely articulated military presence complicate that calm. Mucha gives the scene its force through restraint: Joan stands between garden-like ornament and approaching conflict, monumental in bearing but unmistakably human in her introspection.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the undefined version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
