Issued in 1882, the anonymous advertising design Gibson’s Rip Van Winkle Whiskey centres on a convivial, old-fashioned figure raising a glass. Seated upon a stool and brightly illuminated against a darker landscape, he is encircled by emphatic red lettering and an ornate border. Warm scarlet, orange and gold dominate the composition, while cooler greens and blues open into distant water and mountains behind him. The result is part portrait, part rustic fantasy and part forthright commercial proclamation.

The name draws upon Washington Irving’s much-loved tale “Rip Van Winkle”, first published in 1819. Irving’s protagonist falls into an enchanted sleep in the Catskill Mountains and awakens twenty years later to find both his community and his country transformed. By the late nineteenth century, Rip had become an immediately recognisable figure in American popular culture: genial, bearded and associated with an imagined world before modern haste. His use in whiskey advertising linked the drink with age, storytelling and rustic tradition, demonstrating how Victorian manufacturers increasingly borrowed familiar literary characters to give consumer brands a memorable personality.

A closer look

The composition is carefully organised around the seated man and his raised glass. Highlights catch the folds of his coat and the amber-toned drink, setting both sharply against the deeper browns and greens behind. His cheerful expression and expansive gesture give him the air of a host offering a toast. Beneath him, red fabric spills across the stool, strengthening the chromatic connection between the figure, the surrounding border and the bold word “WHISKEY” below.

The setting adds a surprising degree of spatial complexity to what is essentially an advertisement. At the upper left, a brick wall threaded with leafy vines establishes an intimate, rustic foreground. Beyond the figure, this enclosed setting gives way to water and a mountainous horizon in cooler blue-green tones. A chequered floor at the lower right recedes towards the landscape, its alternating squares creating a pronounced sense of perspective. These layered transitions—from patterned floor and masonry to foliage, water and distant peaks—make the central scene feel almost theatrical.

Typography and ornament complete the design. “GIBSON’S RIP VAN WINKLE” follows the upper curve of a thick red circular frame, while “WHISKEY” anchors the lower edge in large, unmistakable letters. The text does not merely label the scene; it encloses and directs it, turning the figure into a pictorial emblem. Floral motifs around the corners soften this forceful geometry, and small details—the veining of the vine leaves, reflected light in the glass and finely modelled creases of clothing—reward closer inspection.

Context and significance

During the late nineteenth century, richly coloured commercial imagery became an increasingly powerful means of distinguishing packaged goods. Designs of this kind combined illustration, decorative borders and assertive typography into a single recognisable identity. Rather than describing flavour or production, Gibson’s Rip Van Winkle Whiskey constructs an atmosphere: hospitable, picturesque and reassuringly removed from the industrial present.

That mixture of literary reference and visual abundance is central to its appeal. Rip Van Winkle supplies an established story of time suspended, while the elaborate framing, glowing palette and distant landscape transform him into a persuasive brand character. The design remains an engaging example of how nineteenth-century advertising could turn fiction, ornament and commodity into one tightly controlled piece of visual storytelling.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x16in (40x40cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
