Dubonnet. Quinquina. Madagascar, created by Blondel La Rougery in 1951, turns the outline of Madagascar into the organising shape of a vivid promotional design. The island occupies the centre of a blue field, its cream-coloured landmass threaded with red routes, place names and cartographic symbols. Around it, bold lettering, a prominently illustrated Dubonnet bottle and small figures create an energetic hybrid of map, calendar and beverage advertisement.

Dubonnet was a French wine-based aperitif belonging to the quinquina tradition, in which cinchona contributed a characteristically bitter flavour. Here, however, the drink is promoted through geography rather than the familiar conventions of the café or dining table. Madagascar supplies the advertisement with both its structure and its air of distance and worldliness. Produced while the island remained under French colonial rule, the design also belongs to a period in which maps of overseas territories often moved freely between information, promotion and stylised spectacle.

A closer look

The map forms a strong vertical axis through the composition. Madagascar’s long, irregular silhouette is immediately legible against the surrounding blue, while the dense internal network rewards slower attention. Routes traced in red cross the paler ground; their changing thickness and slight shadowing distinguish them from finer boundary lines and printed notations. Small symbols and tightly set labels lend the centre a practical, reference-like character, even as the emphatic palette makes clear that this is cartography pressed into commercial service.

Typography establishes a second hierarchy. “DUBONNET QUINQUINA” appears in large, assertive lettering near the top, functioning almost as a masthead above the mapped island. Lower down, “NY DUBONNET” is treated more decoratively, providing a visual counterweight to the compact information within the map. A thin red border contains the many competing elements, while the restricted combination of blue, cream, red, black and brown keeps the crowded arrangement coherent.

The lower-right corner shifts attention from territory to product. A carefully delineated bottle rises beside a group of figures, its dark form and detailed label contrasting with the flatter expanses of the map. Highlights give the bottle a polished sheen without disturbing the poster’s predominantly graphic character. Along the right edge, a calendar introduces a further layer of use, while “1952” appears prominently at the top: although the design is dated 1951, this visible date points to its intended life in the following calendar year. Decorative and informational details along the opposite margin help balance the asymmetry.

Context and significance

The poster reflects a particularly resourceful strand of mid-century commercial art. Rather than separating illustration, lettering and practical information, it compresses them into a single visual system. The map is sufficiently detailed to suggest authority, yet sufficiently simplified and colour-coded to work instantly from a distance. Madagascar is therefore not merely a location represented within the design; its distinctive contour becomes a logo-like form around which the entire advertisement is built.

Seen today, the work is compelling partly because its multiple functions remain visible at once. It is an advertisement for Dubonnet, a stylised geographical document and a calendar, but also an example of how post-war graphic design used place to construct commercial allure. Its bright surface and playful arrangement are accompanied by a more complex historical undertone, revealing how readily the visual language of cartography could be adapted to branding in the closing years of the colonial era.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
