vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1880
Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1880

Henry Jerome Schile’s Bock Bier, dated 1880, turns a beer advertisement into a piece of comic theatre. A shaggy, dark-furred goat raises an overflowing red mug above a wooden barrel, confronting the viewer with curved horns, bright eyes and an almost ceremonious air. Across the barrel, the drink’s name appears in large, shadowed lettering, so that mascot, merchandise and message are grasped at once. Earthy browns and golden yellows dominate, sharpened by the mug’s rich red and set against a softly receding aqua ground.

Schile worked at a time when commercial illustration and colour printing were becoming increasingly effective means of reaching broad audiences in the United States. Beer advertising was especially well suited to this lively visual culture: a poster had to be legible at a glance, but memorable enough to distinguish one drink from another. Here the goat provides an immediate verbal and visual joke. Bock is the German word for a male goat, and the animal became a familiar emblem of bock beer. The German spelling “Bier” further preserves the drink’s cultural associations at a period when German brewing traditions were highly visible in American life.

A closer look

The poster’s hierarchy is emphatic. The goat occupies the central foreground, its head and horns forming the composition’s most animated silhouette. Schile gives particular attention to the irregular texture of the animal’s coat: fine strands and darker clumps of fur soften the otherwise bold graphic construction. Its expressive face lends the scene a mischievous personality, while the raised mug transforms the pose into something between a toast and a sales pitch.

The beer itself receives its own carefully staged emphasis. Pale foam rises above the lip of the red vessel, with small bubbles and highlights suggesting freshness and abundance. Below, the rounded barrel anchors the composition. Its wooden surface is modelled through warm brown shading and small reflective accents, while a golden tap provides another concentrated flash of colour. The words “Bock Bier” spread across the barrel in decorative, dimensional lettering, their serifs and dark shadows making the name appear almost carved or applied to the wood.

A comparatively open background keeps these elements clear. Soft aqua lightens towards the upper area, creating space around the goat’s horns and dark coat, while muted yellow-green marks along the lower edge suggest grass or rough earth. This slight hint of an outdoor setting is enough to prevent the central group from feeling purely diagrammatic, yet it never competes with the advertisement’s essential components. The eye moves easily from the goat’s face to the lifted mug, then down to the barrel and its lettering.

Context and significance

Bock Bier belongs to a form of nineteenth-century advertising in which illustration did more than decorate a product name: it created a recognisable character around it. The mascot makes the foreign-language term intelligible without requiring explanation, while the festive gesture associates the drink with sociability and good humour. Such imagery reflects the increasingly sophisticated popular graphic culture of the period, when commercial messages borrowed the colour, detail and narrative appeal of pictorial art.

What makes Schile’s design especially engaging is the balance between directness and observation. From a distance, it reads as a bold arrangement of goat, mug, barrel and type; at closer range, the fur, foam, wood grain and typographic shadowing reward attention. The result is both an advertisement and a compact visual pun, delivered with the theatrical confidence of late nineteenth-century graphic design.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
