hamburger-burgerbrau-vintage-beer-poster-by-paul-scheurich-1912
Hamburger Bürgerbräu Vintage Beer Poster by Paul Scheurich, 1912

Paul Scheurich’s 1912 poster Bürgerliches Brauhaus in Hamburg. Hamburger Bürgerbräu centres on a stout, formally dressed gentleman caught in profile as he raises a brimming glass of beer. His warm brown clothing, softly coloured lapel rose and brightly illuminated drink emerge crisply from the near-black ground. Rather than crowding the scene with tavern detail, Scheurich relies on an economical arrangement of figure, lettering and tabletop objects, giving the advertisement the immediacy of a character portrait.

Created at a moment when German commercial design was moving towards increasingly bold and concise visual language, the poster reflects the transition between the decorative sensibility of Art Nouveau and the directness of modern advertising. Scheurich, a German artist born in 1883, turns the brewery’s message into a carefully staged encounter: the beer is not presented in isolation, but through the evident satisfaction and ceremonious bearing of its drinker. Simplified forms and emphatic colour contrasts allow the design to communicate quickly without sacrificing wit or polish.

A closer look

The figure occupies the right half of the composition, his rounded profile set against an uninterrupted dark field. Strong highlights define his forehead, nose and cheek, while the glass forms a second, more luminous profile in front of him. Golden beer and pale reflections catch the eye first; the smaller rose at his lapel then provides an unexpectedly delicate accent. His formal attire and upright posture lend the act of drinking an almost civic dignity, balanced by the poster’s gently comic exaggeration.

Across the left side, the brewery identity is carried by decorative lettering and a banner bearing the words “Hamburg Bürger Bräu”. Cooler green typography offsets the browns, amber golds and peach tones of the figure. Above, “Bürgerliches Brauhaus in Hamburg” establishes the advertiser with typographic clarity, while the generous areas of darkness around the words prevent the various elements from competing. Text and illustration are therefore held in a deliberate asymmetry: compact lettering to the left, expansive human presence to the right.

The foreground rewards closer attention. A chequered tablecloth introduces a rhythm of warm-toned squares beneath the otherwise smooth expanses of colour. Nearby, a small statuette-like figure stands on a pedestal and holds a flag, adding another vertical accent and a note of pageantry. The scale contrast is playful: the miniature figure appears ceremonial, while the beer drinker towers over the composition. Scheurich’s cursive signature at the lower right is integrated discreetly into this carefully layered arrangement.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century posters had to command attention in busy public settings, and this design demonstrates how effectively a commercial message could be concentrated into a handful of memorable forms. The dark background suppresses incidental detail; the silhouette is readable at a glance; and the brewery name is woven into the composition rather than treated as a detached caption. Flat colour and sharply separated tonal areas give the scene its graphic force, while selective highlights preserve a sense of volume in the face and glass.

What distinguishes Scheurich’s advertisement is its combination of promotional directness and theatrical characterisation. The gentleman, rose, chequered cloth and diminutive standard-bearer create a compact social world around the beer—urbane, convivial and faintly humorous. More than a straightforward product display, Hamburger Bürgerbräu reveals how commercial imagery in 1912 could turn an everyday beverage into a polished and memorable visual performance.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
