evian-cachat-vintage-mineral-water-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1912
Evian-Cachat Vintage Mineral Water Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1912

Leonetto Cappiello’s Buvez tous Evian-Cachat, created around 1912, turns a bottle of mineral water into the commanding presence of a theatrical tableau. An immense green bottle rises through the centre of the composition, flanked by two dancers in flowing yellow dresses and garlanded with vivid red-pink flowers. Set against an almost unbroken black ground, these few elements acquire exceptional clarity: the bottle appears luminous, the figures seem to spring into motion, and the exhortation “BUVEZ TOUS” can be grasped almost instantaneously.

Italian-born and later active in Paris, Cappiello was among the most influential designers in early twentieth-century poster art. His advertisements often rejected elaborate settings in favour of one memorable figure or object, enlarged and isolated through emphatic colour contrast. This economy was particularly effective on the modern city street, where a poster needed to distinguish itself amid traffic, shopfronts and competing notices. Here, Evian-Cachat is communicated not through an informative scene but through a compact visual identity: brilliant green glass, celebratory movement and monumental lettering.

A closer look

The bottle establishes the poster’s strong vertical axis. Its dark emerald body is modelled with pale highlights that suggest the sheen and transparency of glass, while the cap catches a sharper point of light. Near the lower part of the bottle, the pink label introduces a smaller area of intricate detail; the words “SOURCE CACHAT” are embedded within it, contrasting with the much larger advertising message around the central motif. This alternation between fine label work and broad, declarative forms allows the brand to operate at two scales.

On either side, the dancers provide a lively counterweight to the bottle’s rigid upright form. Their raised arms, bent legs and billowing skirts describe outward curves, making the central object seem still more solid by comparison. Warm yellow fabric stands out crisply against the black, while red and pink floral strands cascade around the figures and across the green glass. The composition is not strictly symmetrical—the poses and decorative details vary—but its visual weight remains carefully balanced.

Typography completes the structure rather than merely captioning it. “BUVEZ TOUS” occupies the upper register in bold green letters, its colour echoing the bottle below. “EVIAN-CACHAT” stretches across the lower section in large, forceful capitals, anchoring the airborne gestures above. Cappiello leaves ample dark space between these elements, ensuring that each silhouette remains legible and that the eye moves rapidly from slogan to bottle to brand name.

Context and significance

Made during the late Belle Époque, the poster belongs to a period when commercial imagery was becoming an increasingly prominent part of Parisian visual culture. Advertising designers were not simply describing products; they were developing distinctive characters, colour schemes and graphic motifs that could be recognised before every word had been read. Cappiello’s streamlined approach was ideally suited to this environment. His work demonstrates how exaggeration of scale and simplification of setting could produce a more immediate impression than conventional realism.

Buvez tous Evian-Cachat is especially effective because its festive imagery remains disciplined. The dancers suggest pleasure and vitality, yet they never overwhelm the product; every sweeping contour leads back towards the bottle. The result is both decorative and remarkably direct—a concise example of how Cappiello transformed an everyday commodity into an unforgettable urban spectacle.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
