vlan-du-berni-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1928
Vlan! du Berni Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1928

Published in 1928, Vlan! du Berni is a vividly theatrical beverage poster lithographed by the Belgian firm Oscar de Rycker & Mendel. A blonde woman in a brilliant green-and-yellow dress reclines within an enormous glass of red liquid, raising a smaller cocktail glass as though caught in the middle of an exuberant toast. Above her, a scarlet splash breaks the upper edge of the composition. Against the deep black ground, figure, drink and lettering appear almost electrically bright.

The poster belongs to the lively commercial culture of the interwar years, when publicity increasingly relied on abbreviated forms, emphatic typography and saturated colour to command attention in busy public spaces. Oscar de Rycker & Mendel, active in Belgium during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced the work as a lithograph—a process particularly suited to the strong colour areas and crisp graphic contrasts seen here. Its commercial purpose is unmistakable, yet the design turns a beverage advertisement into a compact visual performance, built around surprise, humour and movement.

A closer look

The composition revolves around an engaging confusion of scale. The principal glass is large enough to become a stage, seat and vessel at once. Its bowl is filled with opaque crimson-red colour, while the stem and foot are rendered more transparently, with pale highlights and darker shadows giving them a suggestion of depth. The woman appears to burst from—or tumble delightedly into—this impossible object, her relaxed pose offset by the upward thrust of the splash behind her.

Colour does much of the poster’s work. The saturated red of the drink is set against black, while the woman’s sharp green dress creates an equally forceful contrast. Yellow details punctuate the costume and connect it visually with the bold lettering at the lower right. Her pale skin and softly curled blonde hair form the lightest area of the design, ensuring that her face remains legible amid the stronger blocks of colour. In her raised hand, the smaller glass catches bright reflections along its rim and base; its pinkish contents echo the larger red form without competing with it.

The lettering “Vlan! du Berni” is not treated as a detached caption. Its cheerful yellow characters curve with the action, reinforcing the visual rhythm established by the woman’s body, the rounded glass and the spray of liquid. Fine outlines around the splash sharpen the sensation of arrested motion, while a narrow cream border contains the otherwise expansive black field. Much of the surrounding space is left empty, concentrating attention on the central comic spectacle.

Context and significance

Posters such as this were designed for immediate recognition rather than prolonged contemplation. Vlan! du Berni achieves that clarity through a deliberately limited set of elements: one figure, two glasses, a dark ground and a short, emphatic title. Yet within that economy lies considerable invention. The human figure and advertised drink are fused into a single memorable motif, while the title’s exclamation mark gives the words something of the same sudden impact as the airborne splash.

The result is characteristic of interwar graphic advertising at its most spirited: visually direct, knowingly playful and unconcerned with naturalistic scale. Its appeal lies not only in the period glamour of the curled hair and bright costume, but in the discipline beneath the exuberance. Every curve, highlight and colour block helps deliver the same quick burst of energy.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
