Seguir leyendoOude Genever, ‘t Lekker Stoopje (1919–1923), created by Litho Myncke in 1919, turns a convivial drinking scene into an emphatic piece of early twentieth-century advertising. Three figures gather around a barrel, one presenting a bottle and another raising a small glass, while richly saturated reds, yellows and greens give the encounter the heightened cheerfulness of popular commercial art. Above them, the words “Oude Genever” and “‘t Lekker Stoopje” command the poster in large decorative lettering, making the brand inseparable from the scene of sociability below.
Genever, a traditional spirit of the Netherlands and Belgium, carried associations of established custom as well as everyday pleasure. This poster draws upon both. Its rustic costumes, windmills, boats and sheaves of wheat construct a recognisably Low Countries setting, while the streamlined hierarchy of type, figures and product belongs to a more modern language of promotion. In the years after the First World War, lithography remained central to commercial publicity: strong colour and bold forms allowed advertisers to communicate quickly, memorably and at a distance.
A closer look
The vertical design is organised around a circular vignette, within which the figures form a compact theatrical group. At the left, a woman in traditional dress holds a glass; the patterning of her apron introduces a note of intricate detail amid the poster’s broader areas of colour. Opposite her, a jovial figure in a black hat and striped shirt leans into the exchange. A third figure, more heavily dressed in a fur-trimmed coat, completes the gathering. Their contrasting clothing helps each silhouette remain distinct, even as the group is tightly arranged around the barrel.
The barrel serves simultaneously as table, rustic prop and visual anchor. Bottle labels and the reflective glint of the drinking glass provide small points of precision at the centre of the scene, directing attention back to the advertised genever. Behind the drinkers, a waterway with boats and windmills opens the composition into depth. Blue sky and distant land cool the otherwise warm palette, preventing the reds and golden yellows from overwhelming the scene.
A border of wheat motifs frames the central vignette and extends the product’s imagery beyond convivial drinking towards grain and agricultural tradition. Typography performs an equally important role. The broad, decorative title is not treated as a caption added after the fact; it is built into the architecture of the poster, its curves and weight balancing the circular scene beneath. Smaller lettering in the lower area supplies the commercial information, but the main message is carried by scale, colour and immediate recognition.
Context and significance
The poster belongs to a period in which advertising increasingly relied on compressed visual storytelling. Rather than presenting the bottle alone, Litho Myncke surrounds it with a complete social world: shared drink, familiar characters, traditional landscape and abundant grain. Such imagery made the commodity appear rooted in custom, while the bold colour contrasts and simplified arrangement ensured that the design felt current and persuasive.
That tension between tradition and modern graphic communication gives Oude Genever, ‘t Lekker Stoopje its particular interest. Its imagery looks back to a picturesque, communal ideal, yet its visual economy is unmistakably that of modern publicity. Figures, lettering and landscape all work towards the same concise proposition: old genever presented not merely as a beverage, but as the centre of a lively and recognisable cultural scene.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
