t-glazen-stoopje-vintage-genever-poster-1910
‘t Glazen Stoopje Vintage Genever Poster, 1910

Litho Myncke’s 1910 poster Oude Genever, ‘t Glazen Stoopje turns a spirits advertisement into a spirited maritime tableau. Against a brilliant red ground, a jovial captain raises a small glass while presenting a bottle of genever, his dark blue uniform sharpened by gold trim, bright buttons and crisp white accents. Flags, shipping and a prominently lettered life preserver extend the nautical theme around him, while the close crop gives the figure the immediacy of a genial host stepping forward to offer a toast.

Created by a Belgian artist active around the turn of the century, the poster belongs to an era in which lithography gave commercial advertising unusual graphic force. Oude genever—the traditional juniper-flavoured spirit associated with the Netherlands and Belgium—is not presented here as an austere commodity, but as part of a sociable world of ports, travel and convivial exchange. Decorative lettering and emphatic branding reflect the practical purpose of early twentieth-century poster design, yet the ornamental detail and flowing arrangement also carry the visual flourish associated with Art Nouveau-era print culture.

A closer look

The composition is organised around contrasts that would have made it readily legible from a distance. Warm red dominates the field, setting off the cooler blue of the captain’s coat and the white of his shirt, glass and surrounding graphic elements. His illuminated face and raised hand form the principal focus. The glass catches a pale reflection, while the bottle’s elaborate label—with its circular emblem and decorative type—turns the advertised object into a carefully staged visual attraction.

Although the captain commands the foreground, the right side is animated by maritime emblems. Colourful flags rise and overlap near the upper edge, introducing diagonal movement into an otherwise firmly structured design. Below them, a life preserver bearing the words “S.S. Scaldis” and “Antwerpen” creates a strong circular counterweight to the upright figure. Its lettering also anchors the fantasy of seafaring hospitality to Antwerp, a city whose identity was closely bound to its port.

Behind these bold elements lies a more lightly handled harbour scene. Sailing vessels, waterfront buildings and a small rowing boat recede into the middle and lower distance, providing atmosphere without competing with the product or slogan. This layering is particularly effective: the captain and bottle are drawn with clean, assertive contours, while the port is quieter and less distinct. Across the top, the title “Oude Genever ‘t Glazen Stoopje” occupies the most valuable advertising space, its decorative forms large enough to be read as both language and pattern. The name “Establishments Hellemans-Mertens & C°” appears within the design, identifying the commercial concern behind the drink.

Context and significance

Posters such as this were designed for a rapidly modernising consumer marketplace in which a memorable figure, a restricted palette and instantly recognisable lettering could establish a brand at a glance. Litho Myncke combines these necessities with narrative detail: rather than isolating the bottle, the design constructs an entire setting around it. The uniformed spokesman, fluttering flags and busy harbour associate the genever with confidence, camaraderie and the cosmopolitan traffic of a major trading city.

What makes Oude Genever, ‘t Glazen Stoopje particularly engaging is this balance between direct salesmanship and visual storytelling. Its message remains unmistakable, but small discoveries—the gold edging of the uniform, the patterned flags, the distant craft and the precisely lettered life preserver—reward a longer look. It is at once a vivid example of early twentieth-century beverage advertising and a lively fragment of Antwerp’s maritime visual culture.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
