One seated figure emerges most clearly near the centre, wearing a hat and muted clothing, while the forms around the couple dissolve into layered blue-green foliage. Rather than separating figure from setting, Macke allows bodies, grass and trees to mingle through softened contours and shifting patches of colour. A pale grey sky opens above them, giving the enclosed foreground an unexpected sense of distance.
This is an early work by an artist who would later become closely associated with German Expressionism and Der Blaue Reiter. Made during Macke’s teenage years, it precedes the luminous colour, simplified forms and clearly bounded figures for which his mature paintings are best known. Its interest lies partly in that sense of development: the subject is an ordinary moment of repose, yet the landscape is already more than a neutral backdrop. Colour and handling give the scene its emotional register, reflecting the wider early twentieth-century move away from strict naturalism towards a more subjective treatment of perception and atmosphere.
A closer look
The composition is asymmetrical but carefully balanced. The seated figure occupies the central foreground, partially screened by vegetation, while trees and branches gather more densely towards the left and right edges. Their darker masses form a loose frame around the lighter opening beyond. This arrangement draws the eye through the immediate greenery towards faint trees and fields in the distance, where the forms become paler and less defined.
Cool blues and varied greens dominate, but they are moderated by earthy brown and ochre accents across the lower foreground. The ground beneath the figures is not treated as a smooth, continuous plane: short, visible strokes and blended passages suggest uneven grass, leaf litter and soft soil. Hints of yellow and gold appear beyond the nearer tree line, perhaps indicating a meadow catching more light than the shaded foreground. These warmer notes are restrained, yet they prevent the cool palette from becoming uniformly subdued.
Macke’s edges range from firm to almost fugitive. The seated silhouette is sufficiently clear to anchor the composition, but details of clothing are indicated rather than precisely described. Similar softening occurs among the leaves, where individual marks accumulate into textured clusters before blurring into broader areas of tone. Above, the light grey sky provides the quietest passage in the painting. Its relative emptiness makes the foliage appear denser and helps establish the gentle, overcast illumination that runs throughout the scene.

Mi marco estándar es un marco de madera de fresno negro estilo galería. Es simple y tiene un aspecto bastante moderno. Mi marco estándar tiene alrededor de 20 mm (0.8 in) de ancho.
Utilizo acrílico super claro (perspex/acrylite) para el vidrio del marco. Es más ligero y seguro que el vidrio, y se ve mejor, ya que la reflectividad es menor.
Seis colores de marco estándar están disponibles de forma gratuita (negro, marrón oscuro, gris oscuro, roble, blanco y oro antiguo).El enmarcado y montaje/matizado personalizado está disponible si buscas algo diferente.
La mayoría de los mapas, arte e ilustraciones también están disponibles como un lienzo enmarcado.
