| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Mapas enmarcados

Seguir leyendoPierre Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Orbessanea, dated 1817 and associated with the period 1817–1824, gives a single rose stem the clarity and presence of a formal portrait. A softly pink flower opens near the centre, surrounded by serrated green leaves and buds at different stages of growth. The specimen rises vertically against a pale, almost empty ground, allowing every branching stem, thorn and folded petal to remain distinct. Restrained colour and subtle tonal transitions lend the plant volume without diminishing the precision of its botanical structure.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for reconciling close natural observation with remarkable decorative refinement. His career coincided with an expanding European interest in collecting, identifying and publishing plants, when botanical illustration served both scientific study and cultivated pleasure. Roses were especially suited to his gifts: their layered petals demanded minute tonal control, while their leaves, prickles and tightly furled buds offered contrasting textures. In Rosa Orbessanea, accuracy and elegance are not competing aims but parts of the same visual language.
A closer look
The principal bloom is constructed from overlapping petals that deepen from pale blush at their outer edges to stronger pink within the folded centre. Fine stippling and gentle shading describe the flower’s soft, irregular surface, while its slightly cupped form prevents it from becoming a flat decorative emblem. Immediately above, a lighter bud remains partially closed, providing a concise botanical comparison between growth stages. Smaller buds elsewhere along the stem extend this sense of development across the composition.
The foliage has a firmer graphic character. Rich greens shift subtly between the upper surfaces and undersides of the leaves, and closely observed veins run through sharply toothed margins. Near the lower centre, the leaf structure becomes particularly legible: individual leaflets spread from the stem in a measured rhythm, their contours crisp against the open background. Tiny thorns interrupt the slender branches, an easily missed detail that makes the study more complete and gives the graceful silhouette a slight visual tension.
Redouté uses the blank field as an active part of the design. The stem bends and divides without crowding the page, with the cluster at upper left counterbalanced by smaller leaves and buds towards the lower right. This asymmetry keeps the plant natural in appearance while preserving the ordered clarity expected of a botanical plate. At the bottom, the inscription identifies the subject as “Rosa Orbessanea” and gives the French name “Rosier d’Orbesplan”, anchoring the delicately observed plant within the classificatory purpose of the image.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period occupied a distinctive territory between art and natural history. Before photography, an accomplished flower study could record colour, habit and structure while also presenting an ideal, readily examined specimen. Redouté’s approach is especially notable for avoiding both extremes: the rose is neither reduced to a diagram nor absorbed into an elaborate garden setting. Isolated and enlarged, it becomes at once an object of study and a carefully balanced composition.
The enduring appeal of Rosa Orbessanea lies in that dual character. From a distance, its ascending stem and blush-pink bloom have an effortless decorative poise; closer inspection reveals serrations, veins, prickles and nuanced changes in the petals. It rewards the botanical eye while retaining the quiet sophistication for which Redouté’s flower studies remain so widely admired.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
