Seguir leyendoPublished with a 1987 imprint using mid-century survey data first compiled in 1958, the US Geological Survey’s “Captiva” presents Florida’s barrier-island coast at the refined 1:24,000 scale. The map captures Captiva Island and its surrounding waters with the clarity that made USGS quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, navigators, and naturalists. Here, the Gulf of Mexico meets Pine Island Sound in a delicately rendered coastal landscape of beaches, channels, shoals, and low-lying landforms. The title itself is spare and evocative, focusing attention on Captiva as both a place of resort-like beauty and a dynamic edge between land and sea. As a historical topographical record, it preserves the island before later decades of intensified development, ecological management, and shoreline change.
The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became the United States’ principal authority for mapping the nation’s terrain, geology, water resources, and natural hazards. Its topographic maps were designed not merely as geographic references, but as working scientific documents—precise, systematic, and visually legible. In this Captiva sheet, that tradition is evident in the careful balance of utility and elegance: fine linework distinguishes roads, shorelines, structures, and vegetation, while subtle contouring records even modest shifts in elevation. Such details are especially meaningful in a coastal setting where small changes in height can determine patterns of flooding, settlement, and habitat. The map belongs to a great American cartographic lineage, translating field survey, aerial observation, and scientific measurement into a beautifully disciplined image.
Captiva Island appears as a slender, wave-shaped landform facing the Gulf of Mexico, with beach areas tracing its western edge and quieter inland waters lying to the east. Pine Island Sound dominates the surrounding geography, a broad estuarine expanse threaded by small channels and sheltered reaches. Foster Point, the village of Captiva, causeway approaches, residential subdivisions, and unnamed waterways give the map an intimate, local character. Yet the sheet also conveys the larger coastal system: islands, shallows, aquatic preserves, and tidal passages interacting in a landscape continually shaped by storm, current, and sediment. The result is both a navigational document and a portrait of island life, showing how settlement occupies a narrow corridor between surf, mangrove, sound, and open horizon.
The design is characteristically mid-century USGS, with pastel blues and greens lending the map a calm, almost painterly coastal atmosphere while serving precise cartographic functions. Water bodies are rendered in cool blue tones, vegetation and marshy environments in soft green, and landforms through contour lines and measured symbols. On a barrier island, where relief is subtle, the depiction of elevations and depressions becomes particularly important: dunes, swales, shore margins, and low ground are all part of the environmental story. The map’s visual restraint allows its scientific content to emerge clearly. Roads and settlement patterns are legible without overwhelming the natural setting, while the surrounding aquatic preserves and waterways reinforce the ecological richness that has long defined the Captiva region.
Historically, this map is a valuable witness to a changing Florida coast. Captiva and the neighboring islands of Pine Island Sound have experienced decades of development, conservation efforts, storm impacts, and shoreline modification. By reflecting conditions rooted in the 1950s, the map offers a benchmark against which later transformations can be understood: expanding residential areas, evolving transportation links, protected aquatic habitats, and the shifting relationship between tourism and environmental stewardship. It records a moment when Captiva’s village, beaches, channels, and preserves formed a more lightly developed coastal mosaic. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Gulf Coast geography, the sheet combines scientific authority with quiet beauty, preserving the contours of a beloved island landscape at a pivotal stage in its modern history.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
