martini-rossi-vintage-vermouth-poster-by-torta-pecco-maurer-1909
Martini & Rossi Vintage Vermouth Poster by Torta & Pecco Maurer, 1909

Vermouth Martini & Rossi, created in 1909 by the Italian design studio Torta & Pecco Maurer, turns an aperitif advertisement into a vivid theatrical encounter. Against a field of saturated red, a fashionably dressed woman raises a small glass while a prominently placed bottle occupies the foreground. Her flowing yellow gown supplies the poster’s strongest counterpoint: a broad, luminous shape whose curving lines stand out sharply against the almost unbroken background.

The poster belongs to the exuberant visual culture of Belle Époque advertising, when commercial lithography brought intense colour and increasingly ambitious graphic design to the streets of European cities. Drinks brands were particularly well suited to this new visual language. Rather than presenting vermouth as a merely practical commodity, Torta & Pecco Maurer associated Martini & Rossi with fashionable sociability, elegant dress and cosmopolitan leisure. Branding remains unmistakable, yet it is carried by an image with the scale, colour and immediacy needed to command attention in a crowded urban setting.

A closer look

The composition is built around a carefully judged balance between figure and bottle. The woman occupies the upper left, her auburn hair and warm yellow dress set against the dominant crimson ground. Her arm extends towards the centre as she holds the transparent glass, a gesture that connects her visually with the advertised drink. Subtle tonal variations soften the folds of the gown, but the overall treatment remains decisively graphic: forms are defined by clean contours and broad areas of colour rather than elaborate modelling.

In the central foreground, the Martini & Rossi bottle rises from the table as the poster’s commercial anchor. Its dark brown body interrupts the surrounding reds and yellows, while highlights along the glass make it immediately legible. The label is unusually decorative at close range, incorporating small floral details that reward attention without weakening the design’s clarity. A second, filled glass appears lower down, reinforcing the relationship between the packaged product and the poised act of drinking above it.

The wording “VERMOUTH MARTINI & ROSSI” stretches across the lower portion in bold red lettering. Its placement gives the design a firm typographic base, while the repetition of red allows the text to remain part of the palette rather than appearing as an afterthought. Even the edge of the table contributes to the poster’s visual rhythm: its decorative contour provides a brief note of ornament amid the large, flat colour fields.

Context and significance

Torta & Pecco Maurer was active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period in which the advertising poster became a meeting point between commercial communication and ambitious illustration. Advances in lithographic production enabled designers to use strong colour contrasts, decorative lettering and simplified silhouettes on a scale suited to public display. The most effective posters did not rely on lengthy explanation; they established an atmosphere at a glance and allowed the brand name to complete the message.

Here, the red-and-yellow palette provides that immediate impact, but the image’s appeal lies equally in its economy. A raised glass, an elegant dress and a prominently labelled bottle are enough to construct a complete social world around the drink. The result is both an advertisement for Martini & Rossi and a concise record of how early twentieth-century graphic design transformed everyday consumption into a spectacle of modern style.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
