Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les Liliacées, Plate 43, published in 1805, presents two flowering specimens in a poised, almost architectural arrangement. From broad, deep-green basal leaves rise contrasting stems: the plant at left carries a loose crown of pale blossoms and buds, while its taller companion forms a dense, tapering spike of tiny white flowers. Their roots remain visible below, completing an image that attends to the whole plant rather than isolating its most decorative parts.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated botanical series Les Liliacées, produced during an era of intense interest in botanical classification, cultivated plants and illustrated natural history. Redouté was among the most admired flower painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, renowned for reconciling scientific clarity with exceptional refinement. Rather than treating observation and ornament as opposing aims, he made accurate plant structure the basis of visual elegance: leaf, root, bud and flower are all given their place within a carefully controlled composition.
A closer look
The two specimens create a subtle study in variation. On the left, a slender stem rises through a small constellation of buds before dividing into delicate, warm-white flowers. The right-hand plant is taller and more emphatically vertical, its numerous blooms packed closely around the upper stem. Individual flowers turn in slightly different directions, preventing the spike from becoming a simple silhouette and giving it a finely textured, almost granular surface.
At the base, overlapping leaves provide the composition’s strongest concentration of colour. Their greens range from fresh, pale tones along the central veins to deeper shades at the folded edges. Minute linear details describe the veining and gentle curvature of each blade, while restrained tonal transitions suggest a smooth, faintly lustrous surface. These substantial leaves anchor the fine stems above, balancing the airy flower heads with a low, spreading weight.
Redouté also includes the less immediately picturesque anatomy beneath the foliage. Earth-coloured roots emerge from the bases in wiry, branching strands, with small hairs carefully articulated against the otherwise empty ground. The generous pale space around both plants is functional as well as elegant: it separates each contour, makes comparisons easy and allows the slightest bud or rootlet to remain legible. Beneath the specimens, finely set botanical labels restore the plate’s scholarly character after the delicacy of the painted forms.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period served several audiences at once. It supported the study and classification of plants, recorded species grown in important collections and appealed to readers drawn to flowers as objects of cultivation and taste. Les Liliacées exemplifies this meeting of disciplines. Its plates possess the descriptive precision expected of natural history, yet their spacious layouts and nuanced colour also belong to the cultivated visual culture of the early nineteenth century.
Plate 43 is especially engaging for its paired structure. The compact flowering cluster and the elongated spike appear almost as variations on a shared botanical grammar, each built from roots, leaves, stem and bloom but producing a markedly different rhythm. Redouté’s achievement lies in making those distinctions immediately intelligible while preserving the singular delicacy of every specimen.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
