Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Ixia miniata, dated 1802 and associated with the period 1802–1816, presents the flowering plant as both living specimen and object of close study. A slender stem rises through long, blade-like green leaves towards a vivid cluster of orange blossoms, their petals warmed by yellow undertones and gathered around finely marked, darker centres. Below, the plant’s pale, rounded bulb and trailing roots remain fully visible, completing an unusually comprehensive portrait from flower to root.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the early nineteenth century, admired for reconciling botanical precision with remarkable compositional grace. His studies belong to a period in which botany was developing rapidly and illustrated florilegia served scholarly as well as ornamental purposes. Rather than reducing a specimen to a dry diagram, Redouté preserved its elegance of growth: identifying structures are carefully recorded, yet the plant retains its rhythm, colour and delicacy.
A closer look
The composition is organised along a strong vertical axis. At the upper centre, open flowers and partially turned blooms form a compact, flame-coloured crown. Their orange shifts subtly from deeper tones at the edges and folds to paler, yellow-inflected passages nearer the interiors. Minute dark stamens punctuate the blossoms, introducing points of crisp definition within the softer gradations of the petals.
Beneath this concentrated display, the leaves create a quieter counterpoint. Several rise sharply along the right of the stem, their narrow forms tapering to precise points; fine lines following their length suggest veins and a smooth, slightly folded surface. The contrast between saturated flowers and deep green foliage is heightened by the warm, muted ground, which contains no landscape or decorative setting to distract from the specimen itself.
The lower part of the plate reveals how observation expands beyond the plant’s outward appearance. The bulb is modelled with restrained brown-grey shading, giving its pale surface a convincing roundness, while delicate roots descend in an irregular fringe. Nearby subsidiary studies isolate floral structures, buds and individual parts. These smaller forms turn the page into a record of examination as well as a balanced botanical composition. Along the lower edge, the flowing label identifies Ixia miniata, its script introducing a human, classificatory note beneath the plant’s organic lines.
Context and significance
Born in 1759, Redouté worked at a moment when accurate plant imagery had particular value: specimens needed to be distinguished, compared and communicated through illustration. Yet accuracy alone does not explain the continuing appeal of his work. In Ixia miniata, information is ordered with exceptional clarity. The principal stem commands the page, secondary studies remain subordinate, and the generous surrounding space makes even the finest contour legible.
The plate’s character lies in this balance between scientific discipline and decorative refinement. Its brilliant orange flowers first command attention, but the quieter details—the leaf veins, exposed root fibres, gentle shadow beneath the bulb and analytical floral sketches—reward a slower reading. Redouté allows the plant to function simultaneously as a botanical subject, a lesson in structure and an elegant study of colour and line.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
