Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1886

Henry Jerome Schile’s Geo. Ringler & Co., Bock Beer, created in 1886, turns a drinks advertisement into a scene of exuberant comic disorder. At its centre, a black goat with emphatic curved horns stands on a tipped table, surrounded by men and women whose reactions range from alarm to delight. Strong reds, warm browns and flashes of yellow intensify the commotion, while the names “Geo. Ringler & Co.” and “BOCK” establish a bold typographic framework around the action.

The goat is more than an amusing mascot. “Bock” is also the German word for a male goat, and brewers and advertisers frequently exploited the pun when promoting this strong beer style. Schile, an American artist active during the nineteenth century, worked at a time when illustrated commercial posters were becoming increasingly sophisticated. Designed to command attention in a busy public setting, such advertisements combined narrative entertainment, recognisable branding and decorative lettering rather than relying on a straightforward announcement of the product.

A closer look

The poster’s visual energy is concentrated in the lower half. The goat occupies the pivotal point of the composition, its dark body and textured coat standing sharply against lighter clothing and the hard, smooth planes of the overturned table. Around it, figures lean, recoil and gesture, their poses setting up a chain of movement across the scene. Fine linework distinguishes individual expressions, while patterned garments and varied silhouettes prevent the assembled drinkers from becoming an anonymous crowd.

Beer itself appears as part of a broader social spectacle. Bottles and glasses catch small highlights on and around the tables, and floral details soften the setting without calming it. Some figures remain seated with their drinks while others respond to the goat’s incursion, allowing Schile to contrast sociable leisure with slapstick disruption. The composition is deliberately asymmetrical: the densest knot of activity sits towards the left and centre, balanced by comparatively open passages to the right.

Beyond the foreground comedy, the scene expands into an industrial landscape. A railway train, smoking chimneys and distant buildings rise behind trees and rolling ground, giving the advertisement an unexpectedly broad sense of place. Plumes of smoke echo the lively gestures below and carry movement into the upper portion of the design. The lettering performs a similarly active role. Decorative company text crowns the scene, while the large word “BOCK” anchors the lower register in assertive yellow, ensuring that the brand message remains legible amid the narrative bustle.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising often needed to do several things at once: identify a maker, distinguish one drink from its competitors and associate consumption with conviviality. Schile’s poster accomplishes this through visual comedy. Rather than presenting beer as an isolated commodity, it constructs a miniature public entertainment around it, with the goat supplying both the joke and an instantly memorable emblem.

The result belongs to a period when commercial graphics increasingly occupied the border between illustration and promotion. Flat areas of saturated colour provide impact at a distance, but closer inspection reveals facial expressions, clothing patterns, reflective glassware and background machinery. That dual appeal—immediate enough to advertise, detailed enough to reward prolonged looking—is what gives Geo. Ringler & Co., Bock Beer its distinctive vitality.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
