Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 106, published in 1827, presents the garden nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) as a lively ascent of scarlet flowers, rounded green leaves and tapering buds. Rather than isolating a single specimen rigidly at the centre, Redouté allows the stems to branch and curve across the pale ground. The strongest blossoms gather through the middle of the composition, their warm red petals and yellow throats standing sharply against the cooler foliage.
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration served both scientific study and a flourishing culture of horticultural connoisseurship. Celebrated as the “Raphael of flowers”, he became renowned for reconciling careful observation with exceptional compositional grace. Choix des plus belles fleurs belongs to this tradition of lavishly illustrated botanical publication: its subjects are sufficiently precise to be studied, yet arranged with the balance and refinement of independent works of art.
A closer look
The plant rises from the lower edge in an asymmetrical sequence of overlapping forms. Broad, nearly circular leaves occupy the lower centre, their radiating veins giving each surface a fan-like structure. Some face outward and appear almost flat, while others tilt or curl, introducing subtle changes of tone. At the left, a leaf turns away from the principal cluster, loosening the silhouette and preventing the arrangement from becoming overly formal.
Above this green foundation, the flowers provide concentrated bursts of colour. Their petals shift from deep vermilion and crimson at the folds to softer, luminous red along the edges. Fine ridges and delicate shading model the petals without making them appear heavy, while the small yellow centres form vivid points of contrast. The blossoms overlap leaves and stems at different levels, creating a modest but persuasive sense of depth against the otherwise unoccupied background.
The upper portion is lighter and more open. Slender stems carry elongated yellow buds towards the upper right, balancing the outward-reaching branch at the upper left. These unopened forms are particularly important to the plate’s rhythm: they extend the composition beyond the full flowers and suggest successive stages of growth. Near the lower leaves, a small rounded green form adds another botanical detail, easily missed beside the more emphatic blooms. Beneath the specimen, the identifying inscription “Tropaeolum majus Var” appears at the left, with “P. J. Redouté” at the right.
Context and significance
Although the nasturtium was familiar as a cultivated garden plant, Redouté treats it with the same close attention he brought to more ceremonially prized flowers. Its distinctive contrasts suit his art particularly well: disc-shaped leaves against irregular petals, flexible stems against compact blooms, and saturated reds against nuanced greens. The generous surrounding space is equally purposeful, making the plant’s branching structure legible while preserving the elegance of the page.
The plate reflects an early nineteenth-century appetite for images in which natural history and visual pleasure were closely entwined. Redouté’s achievement lies not merely in recording the plant’s features, but in ordering them so that botanical information becomes a coherent visual progression—from mature leaves and open flowers to the finer buds at the top. Plate 106 rewards both a distant glance, dominated by its scarlet blossoms, and slower looking, when the veins, curled edges, overlapping stems and gentle tonal transitions begin to emerge.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
