Seguir leyendoArmand Henrion’s Fantasia, liqueurs sans alcool, published in 1897, turns a range of non-alcoholic drinks into a concentrated display of colour, appetite and modern graphic persuasion. Against an emphatic red ground, a smiling woman in a brilliant white dress raises a glass, while the name “FANTASIA” and the phrase “LIQUEURS SANS ALCOOL” command the upper part of the poster. Bottles gathered at the lower right advertise flavours including Cerises, Punch, Ramboises, Citron and Grenadine, their dark labels forming a crisp counterpoint to the figure’s pale costume.
Henrion was a Belgian artist working at a moment when brightly coloured commercial posters were transforming the streets of European cities. Dated 1875 and published in 1897, this design belongs to the expanding visual culture of fin-de-siècle advertising, when developments in colour printing encouraged artists and manufacturers to compete for attention through forceful silhouettes, decorative lettering and simplified blocks of colour. Rather than constructing an elaborate scene, Henrion condenses the sales message into three instantly legible elements: brand, consumer and product.
A closer look
The central figure supplies the poster with its animation. Her body is defined less by modelling than by the sharp meeting of white fabric and scarlet background, making her read almost as a cut-out shape. Small details prevent that shape from becoming austere: her hair is arranged in buoyant curls, the hem of her dress ends in fringe-like embellishments, and the glass catches a few pale highlights. Her raised hand and open smile give the composition an upward, celebratory movement without distracting from the drink itself.
Typography is integrated into this performance rather than treated as supplementary information. “FANTASIA” spreads across the upper left in large decorative letters, establishing the brand before the eye descends towards the figure. The product description occupies the upper and central area in strongly contrasting black and white. Set against the uninterrupted red field, the lettering remains readable from a distance—the essential requirement of a street poster—while also contributing to the pattern of light and dark forms.
At the lower right, the row of bottles creates a compact secondary rhythm. Their repeated upright profiles echo the vertical format, while the white-on-black labels separate the individual flavours with unusual clarity. This ordered display balances the woman’s more expansive silhouette and guides the eye diagonally from her raised glass down towards the advertised range. The flat red background contains almost no incidental setting, so every contour, label and gesture serves the poster’s commercial purpose.
Context and significance
Fantasia reflects a period in which advertising increasingly borrowed the scale and visual economy of public spectacle. Posters had to communicate rapidly amid busy urban surroundings, and Henrion’s limited palette is particularly effective: hot red supplies intensity, white isolates the figure and principal lettering, and black provides definition. The result depends on contrast rather than atmospheric depth, favouring immediate recognition over pictorial realism.
The emphasis on “sans alcool” is equally central to the design. It distinguishes the drinks at a glance while the fruit and flavour names—cherry, punch, lemon and grenadine among them—suggest variety through language rather than elaborate illustration. Henrion’s poster therefore remains an engaging study in late nineteenth-century brand-making: economical in its means, theatrical in its presentation, and carefully organised so that pleasure and product information occupy the same bold visual field.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
