Seguir leyendoElixir De Kempenaar, created by an anonymous designer in 1894, turns a beverage advertisement into an expansive balcony scene. A gathering of elegantly dressed figures occupies the right-hand side, while the composition opens towards a distant cityscape beneath a pale blue sky. Warm yellows, ochres and earthy browns give the architecture and clothing a sunlit richness, tempered by cooler blue and green notes. Along the lower edge, the product name appears in emphatic serif capitals: ‘ELIXIR DE KEMPENAAR’.
The poster belongs to a period in which printed advertising was becoming an increasingly visible part of everyday urban culture. Commercial images had to communicate quickly to a growing mass audience, yet they could also offer a miniature world of fashion, sociability and aspiration. Here, the product is promoted not through a simple emblem or bottle study, but through an atmospheric social tableau. The designer’s identity is unrecorded, but the carefully organised balance of lettering, illustration and decorative detail reveals a sophisticated understanding of late nineteenth-century visual publicity.
A closer look
The arrangement is notably asymmetric. The figures form a dense cluster around the balcony, their hats and period dress creating a lively sequence of silhouettes, gestures and overlapping forms. They appear absorbed in conversation rather than formally posed, lending the scene the character of a fleeting social encounter. Gentle highlights catch the crowns and brims of their hats, while delicate shadows help separate one figure from the next without disturbing the poster’s predominantly light tonal structure.
Architecture provides much of the visual drama. Intricate ironwork runs across the balcony, its geometric framework softened by small floral motifs. Towards the lower right, an elaborately ornamented arch introduces a heavier, more sculptural element. These close, decorative passages contrast with the breadth of the background, where rooftops recede towards a hazy horizon. Softly described clouds and muted blue distances create atmospheric depth, making the foreground gathering appear elevated above the surrounding city.
Colour ties these disparate elements together. Vivid yellow and orange accents catch the eye first, while beige, cream and brown establish a warmer underlying register. Cooler blue passages in the sky prevent the design from becoming visually dense, and the broad area of open atmosphere gives the clustered figures room to register clearly. A thin gold-toned border contains the panoramic scene, while the bold lettering below acts as both caption and commercial anchor.
Context and significance
By the 1890s, advertising posters had become a particularly energetic meeting point between commerce and illustration. Bold typography and strong contrast were essential to recognition, but elaborate scenes could associate a product with a desirable setting or mode of life. Elixir De Kempenaar uses precisely this dual structure: the name is direct and unmistakable, while the balcony gathering supplies narrative, elegance and visual atmosphere.
What makes the design especially engaging is the tension between immediacy and detail. At a glance, its warm palette and forceful title fulfil the practical demands of advertising; closer inspection reveals patterned ironwork, carved ornament, varied clothing and a carefully layered urban distance. The result is both a commercial message and a revealing example of how late nineteenth-century graphic culture transformed an everyday beverage into a richly staged social scene.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
