Seguir leyendoGérard Portielje’s Elixir d’Anvers, created in 1913, turns an advertisement for the Belgian herbal liqueur into a compact theatrical scene. A smiling young woman raises a glass of golden-yellow cordial while presenting the labelled bottle in her other hand. Set against a muted beige ground, her blue dress, crisp white apron and warm red accents give the vertically arranged poster an immediate clarity. The gesture is convivial but carefully composed: face, glass and bottle form a visual sequence that carries the eye through both character and brand.
Portielje was a Belgian artist known for genre scenes—images of everyday social life treated with warmth, polish and a sense of performance. Those qualities translate naturally into this commercial commission. Rather than allowing the product to stand alone, he gives it a persuasive human presence, associating the drink with hospitality, refinement and good humour. The poster belongs to a period when advertising imagery was becoming increasingly adept at shaping consumer taste through memorable figures, emphatic lettering and recognisable packages.
A closer look
The woman is placed slightly away from the centre, creating an asymmetry that prevents the pose from feeling static. Her raised hand brings the small glass into a bright area near her face, where light catches the pale amber liquid. Below, the bottle occupies a more substantial block of colour and detail. Its decorative label is sufficiently prominent to function almost as a second piece of typography within the composition, ensuring that the object remains legible even beside the animated figure.
Portielje enriches the promotional clarity with details borrowed from portraiture and costume painting. Black accents sharpen the blue of the dress, while the apron’s lace-edged trim introduces a finer, more intricate texture. A string of pearls at the neck adds a note of elegance; nearby, a vivid red rose provides a small but concentrated burst of colour. These touches temper the practical associations of the apron with a more decorative, socially polished appearance.
Across the upper part of the poster, the bold words “ELIXIR D’ANVERS” establish the graphic hierarchy at once. The lettering balances the figure without competing with her expression, while the relatively shallow background keeps every element close to the picture plane. Warm yellow, soft red and beige are offset by cooler blue and green notes, giving the design both cordiality and visual definition. Even the light shadow cast by the hand against the bottle helps bind gesture and product together.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century beverage posters often depended upon rapid recognition: a name had to register immediately, while a figure, colour scheme or gesture supplied the emotional appeal. Elixir d’Anvers demonstrates that economy particularly well. The brand name is unmistakable, yet the woman’s open smile and raised glass make the commercial message feel like a social exchange rather than a bare announcement.
The result sits convincingly between Portielje’s genre-painting sensibility and the direct language of advertising. Its appeal lies in that balance: a precisely organised sales image enlivened by costume, expression and small decorative flourishes. More than a period beverage advertisement, it offers a revealing glimpse of how commercial art in 1913 borrowed the warmth and narrative charm of figurative painting to make a product memorable.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
