| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Mapas enmarcados

Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Indica Pumila, published in 1817, presents a branching rose spray with the poised clarity for which the French botanical illustrator became renowned. Two open pink blooms form the centre of gravity, their densely layered petals turning from pale blush at the edges to deeper rose within the folds. Around them, buds, serrated leaves and slender stems spread asymmetrically across a warm cream ground, leaving generous areas of space through which the plant’s structure remains easy to read.
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration served both scientific study and an increasingly sophisticated culture of horticulture. His career bridged the gardens and collections of royal and imperial France, the demands of plant classification and the decorative refinement expected of luxury botanical publications. Roses became among his most celebrated subjects: their complex petals allowed him to combine close observation with exceptionally subtle gradations of colour. Here, the historical Latin title is accompanied by the French caption Rosier nain du Bengale, or dwarf Bengal rose, reflecting the botanical vocabulary through which European readers encountered cultivated plants in the early nineteenth century.
A closer look
The composition rises from the lower portion of the plate in a loose, branching rhythm. The largest flowers sit near the centre and slightly to the left, while the foliage extends towards the lower right, counterbalancing their visual weight. No vase, border or landscape distracts from the specimen. Instead, Redouté isolates the rose against an unmarked field, creating a study that is at once analytical and graceful.
Each bloom is built through minute tonal transitions rather than emphatic outlines. The outer petals appear broad and lightly coloured, while the tightly gathered interiors deepen into richer pinks, giving the flowers volume without heaviness. The smaller bud above retains its compact form, offering a useful contrast between different stages of flowering. This progression—from closed bud to fully opened rose—also introduces a quiet sense of growth into an otherwise still arrangement.
The leaves reward equally close attention. Their surfaces are articulated by pale central veins and finer branching lines, while shifts from light to dark green suggest leaves turning at different angles. Delicate thorns interrupt the stems, and the irregular spacing of the foliage prevents the plant from becoming a decorative arabesque. These observed details give the plate its botanical authority; its elegance depends upon, rather than competes with, the specificity of the specimen.
Context and significance
Redouté’s flower studies belong to a long European tradition in which artists translated living, perishable plants into permanent visual records. By the early nineteenth century, such publications answered several overlapping interests: scientific classification, the circulation of newly cultivated varieties and the pleasures of connoisseurship. Redouté was particularly adept at satisfying all three. His compositions make stems, leaves and flower forms legible, yet they also possess the balance and luminous colour of autonomous works of art.
Rosa Indica Pumila demonstrates why his roses remain so distinctive. The plate does not depend on abundance or theatrical arrangement. Its effect comes from restraint: a limited palette of blush pink, fresh green and warm ivory; a carefully judged interval between each branch; and an exacting account of petals, veins and thorns. It is both a record of a named rose and a study in how disciplined observation can produce remarkable visual delicacy.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
