cinzano-vintage-advertising-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1926
Cinzano Vintage Advertising Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1926

Leonetto Cappiello’s Cinzano, created in 1926, turns a drinks advertisement into a feat of theatrical motion. A muscular, shaven-headed rider in billowing white drapery surges across the poster on a brilliant red horse, raising a Cinzano bottle above him like a trophy. Against a background that shifts from deep blue to green, the intertwined figures form a compact burst of colour and energy, while the brand name—set in monumental yellow capitals across the foot of the composition—halts the eye with equal force.

Italian-born and active in Paris, Cappiello was among the designers who reshaped European poster advertising in the early twentieth century. His most memorable works did not rely on detailed explanation: they paired a brand with a single emphatic figure, chosen to remain legible amid the visual noise of the modern street. Cinzano exemplifies that method. Product, character and movement are compressed into an instantly recognisable graphic idea, reflecting an interwar advertising culture in which posters were expected to attract attention quickly and hold their place in public memory.

A closer look

The rider and horse are pushed towards the right, giving the composition an unstable, forward-driving momentum. The horse appears almost airborne, its raised body and sharply angled limbs suggesting a leap rather than an ordinary gallop. Bold darker stripes travel across its red form, articulating the animal’s flank and adding a lively decorative rhythm. Small highlights pick out its muscular structure, but Cappiello avoids unnecessary detail: the silhouette remains the essential carrier of action.

The human figure provides a strong counterpoint. His pale skin and flowing white garment stand sharply against the saturated red beneath him, while the garment’s broad, curving folds seem to stream backwards in response to the horse’s movement. One arm anchors him to the animal; the other rises vertically, carrying the bottle into the upper portion of the poster. The gesture is exaggerated enough to read at a distance, yet the visible bottle label keeps the spectacle tied firmly to the advertised name.

Colour establishes a precise visual hierarchy. The red horse commands immediate attention, the white drapery separates rider from mount, and the yellow lettering supplies a final, immovable base. Behind them, the dark blue upper field softens gradually into green below, creating depth without introducing a setting or narrative background. Even the lettering participates in the drama: “CINZANO” is not a caption added after the event but a substantial horizontal form against which the leaping figures appear to gather speed. Cappiello’s signature at the lower right is comparatively discreet, leaving the brand to dominate.

Context and significance

Cappiello’s approach marked a decisive shift away from crowded promotional scenes towards radical simplification. Rather than inventorying a drink’s qualities, this poster gives Cinzano a vivid visual surrogate: an improbable red horse and triumphant rider whose colouring, scale and pose could be recognised almost instantaneously. Such figures functioned as graphic emblems, linking commercial identity to a memorable character rather than to a lengthy written message.

The design also demonstrates how closely successful poster art depends upon control of distance. From afar, it resolves into three principal signals—the red animal, the raised bottle and the yellow name. Seen more closely, subtler pleasures emerge: the striped modelling of the horse, the curvilinear white folds, the highlights across the rider’s body and the careful overlap of limbs and drapery. Its enduring appeal lies in this balance between immediate impact and disciplined visual invention.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
