cellar-bock-vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1889
Cellar Bock Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1889

Henry Jerome Schile’s Cellar Bock (1889) turns a beer advertisement into a bustling tavern scene, rich in incident and earthy humour. At its centre, a woman carries four foaming mugs through a stone-vaulted cellar, her pale apron and patterned dress standing out against the surrounding browns, ochres and glowing orange-yellow light. An amused patron gestures from the lower right, while drinkers gather more quietly beyond the arch. The large words “BOCK” and “BEER” anchor the lower edge, giving the convivial illustration an unmistakably commercial purpose.

Schile was an American artist working at a moment when advertising was becoming an increasingly prominent part of urban print culture. By the late nineteenth century, commercial pictures had to perform several tasks at once: catch the eye, establish a recognisable name and associate a product with a desirable experience. Cellar Bock does so by constructing an entire social world around its drink. Rather than presenting beer as an isolated commodity, it places it amid conversation, hospitality and rustic abundance. The goat’s head displayed at the upper right adds a visual pun: “Bock” is the German word for a male goat, and the animal became a familiar emblem for the beer style.

A closer look

The composition is organised around the serving woman’s forward movement. Her arms are occupied by the clustered mugs, whose pale, reflective surfaces form one of the brightest areas in the scene. Small costume details—the folds of the apron, the patterned fabric and a neatly indicated pocket—give her figure a degree of specificity that rewards closer attention. Beside her, the seated man in a green jacket leans into the action with a smile and an open-handed gesture, creating a lively exchange across the foreground.

Schile builds depth through the architecture of the cellar. The heavy stone arch frames a warmer interior, where subdued figures sit with their drinks; their smaller scale and softer definition make the central group appear more immediate. At the left, two hatted men converse near a barrel topped by a glass of beer. These secondary episodes prevent the poster from reading as a single posed tableau: the eye moves from one pocket of sociability to another, much as it might across a crowded drinking room.

Text and illustration are closely integrated. Bold yellow lettering along the bottom competes effectively with the darker floor and clothing, while the goat placard in the upper-right corner repeats the advertising message within the fictional setting itself. The goat’s carefully described fur contrasts with the blunt typography, and its head functions almost like a sign above the tavern gathering. Warm colour binds these elements together: deep brown masonry and shadow are relieved by amber light, yellow lettering and the glints across the beer mugs.

Context and significance

Cellar Bock belongs to a period in which advances in mass-reproduced colour imagery encouraged advertisers to favour increasingly elaborate and memorable designs. Schile’s solution combines narrative illustration with graphic directness. The scene offers recognisable characters, expressive faces and architectural atmosphere, yet the product wording remains forceful enough to be read at a glance.

That balance between storytelling and promotion gives the poster much of its continuing interest. Its commercial message is plain, but the numerous glances, gestures and background conversations create something more expansive: a compact record of how late nineteenth-century advertising sold not merely a beverage, but an imagined setting of warmth, company and good cheer.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
