Seguir leyendoJean d’Ylen’s Diablerets – L’Apéritif Généreux, created around 1920, turns a bottle of bitter apéritif into the axis of a spirited theatrical encounter. Two stylised figures sweep in from either side, their flowing red and green robes curling around the central bottle against an almost entirely black ground. Strong outlines, emphatic gestures and saturated colour give the poster an immediate, playful force, while the enlarged product occupies the scene with the commanding presence of a stage prop.
D’Ylen was working at a moment when the European advertising poster had become an art of visual compression: a product, a name and an atmosphere had to register almost instantly in the street. Here, the commercial message is inseparable from a suggestion of festivity and sociability. The bold simplification of form and the highly controlled contrast reflect the influence of Art Deco and related currents in post-war commercial illustration, when glamour, leisure and modern consumer culture were increasingly expressed through rhythmic silhouettes and assertive typography.
A closer look
The composition is anchored by the words “DIABLERETS” across the top, set in substantial yellow lettering that stands out sharply from the black field. Below, the bottle rises through the centre, its label reading “Bitter des Diablerets”. Smaller wording includes “F. Leyvraz Aigle (Suisse)”, introducing a precise geographical note amid the poster’s otherwise fantastical staging. At the foot of the design, “L’Apéritif Généreux” supplies the persuasive promise: not simply an apéritif, but a generous one.
The two figures provide the poster’s movement. The red-robed figure enters from the left and the green-robed figure from the right, their arms extending around the bottle in a loose embrace. Their positions are not perfectly mirrored; this slight asymmetry prevents the design from becoming static and creates the impression that both have been caught mid-gesture. Folds in the garments are reduced to sweeping curves and crisp-edged shapes, allowing red and green to operate as large, memorable colour blocks.
Closer inspection reveals a more delicate register within the central bottle. Small highlights suggest the reflective surface of glass, contrasting with the flatter treatment of the figures, while decorative motifs enliven the label and neck. Beige and white details punctuate the deeper colours, and a narrow pale border contains the otherwise expansive darkness. The result is a carefully managed hierarchy: brand name first, animated figures second, then the finer information awaiting a nearer look.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century beverage posters frequently sold more than flavour. They associated drinking with conviviality, elegance and a heightened social world, relying on character and spectacle rather than extended explanation. D’Ylen’s design is particularly effective because it does not place the bottle in an ordinary café or domestic setting. Instead, the surrounding darkness removes everyday context, allowing colour, gesture and lettering to create a self-contained piece of graphic theatre.
The poster’s enduring appeal lies in this economy. Black space intensifies the limited palette; the figures direct attention without competing with the product; and lettering is made part of the overall rhythm rather than added as an afterthought. Diablerets – L’Apéritif Généreux is both an advertisement and a vivid example of how interwar commercial artists transformed a simple brand message into an image of wit, motion and modern appetite.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Jean d’Ylen’s Diablerets – L’Apéritif Généreux, created around 1920, turns a bottle of bitter apéritif into the axis of a spirited theatrical encounter.
