Seguir leyendoInsecta Coleoptera Pl 120 (1879) by Frederick DuCane Godman is a superb Victorian zoological illustration that captures the era’s passion for cataloguing the natural world. Created at a time when entomology was rapidly advancing, this plate arranges beetles with measured clarity, inviting close comparison of their forms for study and classification. Its careful draftsmanship and restrained color bring forward the distinctive anatomy, patterns, and textures that defined late 19th-century natural history publishing, particularly in documenting the rich diversity of Central American species.
This listing is for a high-quality fine art print produced by The Unique Maps Co., available on acid-free archival paper or on luxurious artist’s cotton canvas. Choose from a range of sizes to suit your space, with optional framing in contemporary or traditional profiles. Personalization is available—add a discreet caption, adjust margins or orientation, or commission a custom size to match a gallery wall or study. Each print is crafted to museum standards for long-lasting color and detail.
Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919) was a leading English naturalist and collector whose life’s work helped shape modern zoological knowledge. Best known for co-editing the monumental Biologia Centrali‑Americana, he dedicated decades to recording the region’s flora and fauna. Plates associated with this project, like Insecta Coleoptera Pl 120, balanced scientific rigor with refined artistry, ensuring they could serve as authoritative references for researchers while captivating a broader audience of natural history enthusiasts.
The plate’s subject matter is notable for both its scientific and cultural significance. During the Victorian period, illustrated volumes were essential tools—demonstrating how species could be recognized and organized into taxonomic systems at a glance. This image typifies that approach: the beetles are presented in a consistent, frontal orientation, making differences in body segmentation, antennal form, and leg structure easy to read. The clean, systematic layout embodies the era’s drive to understand—and order—the astonishing biodiversity of the tropics.
Artistically, the print is a model of precision and restraint. Smooth, exacting linework delineates every contour, while a muted palette of natural browns and blacks is enlivened by subtle amber‑orange and beige notes against a crisp white ground. The negative space heightens each specimen’s silhouette, turning minute anatomical features—spots, stripes, and carapace sheen—into striking design elements. The result is both an instructive scientific plate and a timeless wall piece that pairs beautifully with modern, minimalist interiors as well as cabinets of curiosities and traditional libraries.
As a gift, this fine art print is perfect for naturalists, entomologists, science teachers, and anyone who treasures the blend of art and inquiry. It makes a thoughtful present for Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or a housewarming, and it’s especially meaningful for someone who has recently travelled to or studied Central America.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
