Seguir leyendoRomeo Dumoulin’s A.F. Leon Vinckenbosch Hasselt Liqueurs Fines, dating from around 1920, turns a brand advertisement into an urbane dining scene. A smiling gentleman sits at a laden table while a formally dressed waiter pours from the prominently presented bottle; nearby, an elegantly attired woman in a feathered hat adds a note of fashionable theatre. Warm orange and brown tones suffuse the composition, relieved by touches of pink, green, black and white, while the product itself occupies the social centre of the gathering.
Created by the Belgian artist Dumoulin, the poster belongs to a period in which commercial art was acquiring an increasingly polished visual identity. Advertisers no longer depended solely upon dense explanatory copy: bold lettering, memorable characters and carefully staged settings could associate a product with a desirable way of life. Here, A.F. Léon Vinckenbosch is presented not simply as a Hasselt liqueur brand, but as part of a cultivated ritual of dining, service and sociability. The result offers a revealing glimpse of interwar consumer culture, when graphic design helped transform names and packaging into recognisable brands.
A closer look
The figures create a balanced triangular arrangement around the table. The seated man occupies the foreground, his turned pose and expression directing attention towards the waiter at the lower right. The waiter’s arm, bottle and pouring gesture then guide the eye back towards the glassware and food. On the opposite side, the woman’s feathered hat rises into the upper portion of the design, lending the composition both height and a decorative flourish. Her clothing, like the gentleman’s, is described through clean contours and areas of rich colour rather than excessive modelling.
Much of the poster’s appeal lies in the contrast between crisp graphic structure and small touches of abundance. Fruit introduces subtle variations of colour across the table; glassware catches pale highlights; the patterned cloth gives the central area a denser visual texture. The bottle label remains visible amid these details, ensuring that the scene never loses its advertising purpose. Overlap supplies a modest sense of depth, yet the broad, warm pastel background stays comparatively open, keeping the silhouettes clear and the social exchange immediately legible.
Typography frames the scene with economical confidence. “A.F. Léon Vinckenbosch” establishes the company name in the upper area, while “Liqueurs Fines” appears near the foot of the design. This separation produces an effective hierarchy: brand above, product category below, with the convivial tableau between them acting as the persuasive argument. The lettering and illustration work together rather than competing for attention, a hallmark of accomplished poster design.
Context and significance
Hasselt has a longstanding association with Belgian distilling culture, making the city name more than a simple address in an advertisement for liqueurs. Dumoulin’s refined setting draws upon that context while directing it towards the aspirations of a modern consumer. Formal service, fashionable dress and an abundant table all suggest quality without requiring lengthy claims about the drink itself.
The design is especially effective because it sells atmosphere as much as merchandise. Its limited text can be grasped quickly, while the warm palette and courteous interaction give the brand an immediate social character. Beneath the decorative charm is a carefully controlled piece of visual communication: every glance, gesture and tabletop detail returns attention to the poured liqueur.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
