"Oceania or Islands in the Pacific Ocean," crafted by the esteemed A. & C. Black and Fullarton in the 19th century, is a captivating representation of a world on the brink of modern transformation. This map, part of a series first published in 1864, offers a glimpse into the evolving geographical and political landscapes of the time. It highlights the intricate tapestry of islands scattered across the vast Pacific Ocean, capturing the essence of exploration and discovery that characterized the era. This map is not just a depiction of land and sea; it is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the allure of the unknown.
The artistry of this map is a testament to the skill and dedication of renowned engravers such as Swanston, Petermann, Bartholomew, Macnab, and Johnson. Their craftsmanship brings to life the delicate balance of printed and hand coloring, creating a visual masterpiece that is both informative and aesthetically pleasing. The map's decorative elements, typical of the last highly decorative atlas published in England, add a layer of elegance and sophistication, making it a prized possession for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Delving into the geographical features, the map prominently displays the expansive Pacific Ocean, along with the North Pacific Ocean, and intricately labels numerous islands and island groups. The Andes Mountains are meticulously illustrated along the western coast of South America, providing a sense of scale and grandeur. These features, combined with historical annotations, offer a rich narrative of the regions depicted, inviting viewers to explore the diverse landscapes and cultures that define this part of the world.
The map also reflects the themes of American expansionism and exploration, notably including Alaska, which underscores its significance during this transformative period. The geographical nomenclature and political boundaries depicted on the map provide a snapshot of the mid-19th century world, highlighting the dynamic changes that were reshaping nations and territories. This historical context adds depth and intrigue, making the map a valuable resource for understanding the past.
In summary, this exquisite map of Oceania is more than just a cartographic representation; it is a work of art that captures the imagination and invites exploration. Its combination of historical significance, artistic beauty, and geographical detail makes it a unique and cherished piece for any collection. Whether you are a seasoned historian or a lover of fine art, this map offers a window into a world of discovery and wonder.

This map looks amazing at sizes all the way up to 50in (125cm). If you are looking for a larger map, please get in touch.
Please note: the labels on this map are hard to read if you order a map that is 16in (40cm) or smaller. The map is still very attractive, but if you would like to read the map easily, please buy a larger size.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
