the-yacht-mohawk-of-new-york-by-currier-ives-1876
The Yacht Mohawk of New York by Currier & Ives, 1876

The Yacht “Mohawk” of New York. New York Yacht Club, created by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives in 1876 and drawn by Parson & Atwater, presents the celebrated two-masted schooner under a generous spread of white sail. The Mohawk moves decisively towards the left, its long, dark hull cutting through restless blue water while the rigging forms a taut web of fine lines above the deck. Smaller craft recede towards the horizon, transforming the portrait of a single vessel into a lively panorama of New York’s sailing culture.

The scene acquired a sombre historical resonance in the very year it was made. Built by Joseph Van Dusen in 1875 for the wealthy cotton merchant William T. Garner, the 140-foot Mohawk was the largest racing yacht of her generation. On 20 July 1876, during her maiden voyage in New York Harbor, she capsized in a squall off Stapleton, Staten Island. Garner, his wife and all but two passengers and one crew member were lost. The composed grandeur of this portrayal therefore stands in striking contrast to the yacht’s brief and disastrous early history.

A closer look

The Mohawk dominates the foreground without entirely filling it. Her sails rise into the pale, softly clouded sky, their bright surfaces modelled by delicate changes in tone. Some are full and rounded by the wind; others are seen at sharper angles, creating an energetic sequence of triangles across the upper half of the composition. Below, restrained gold-coloured details pick out the otherwise dark hull, while subtle reflections along its side connect the vessel to the shifting water.

The sea is particularly active at lower right, where broken strokes of deep blue, grey and white suggest waves folding against one another. Pale foam gathers beneath the yacht, reinforcing the impression of speed and weight. At lower left, a small boat carrying a red flag provides a vivid accent and a useful measure of scale: set beside it, the Mohawk appears immense. More distant sailing vessels are lightly described near the horizon, their diminished forms lending depth while suggesting a busy maritime setting beyond the principal yacht.

The lower margin gives the vessel’s name in emphatic serif lettering, followed by descriptive particulars and measurements. This formal captioning complements the precision of the rigging and hull, giving the composition something of the character of a commemorative ship portrait. Yet the softly graduated sky and animated surface of the water keep the scene from feeling merely technical.

Context and significance

Currier & Ives became closely associated with widely circulated views of nineteenth-century American life, including cities, landscapes, public events, sport and transport. Yachting subjects united several of those interests: they recorded named vessels while also presenting sailing as spectacle, competition and an expression of modern wealth. Here, the New York Yacht Club affiliation places the Mohawk within the elite sporting world for which she was commissioned.

The vessel’s story did not end with the catastrophe. The Mohawk was raised at a cost of $25,000, acquired for the Coast Survey and renamed Eagre—a word for a tidal bore, ultimately derived from the name of the Norse sea god. Seen with that later history in mind, this stately 1876 portrait preserves the yacht at the height of her original identity: sails drawing, flags visible and the great schooner apparently secure amid the traffic of New York waters.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
