old-map-of-moosehead-lake-maine-by-usgs-1977-greenville-mount-kineo-big-moose-mountain
Old Map of Moosehead Lake, Maine by USGS, 1977 – Greenville, Mount Kineo & Big Moose Mountain

Published in 1981 from 1977 survey data, the USGS map titled “Moosehead” presents one of Maine’s most storied landscapes with unusual immediacy. Centered on Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in the state, it captures a region where deep northern waters, forested shorelines, islands, roads, and mountain forms meet in a richly textured late-twentieth-century portrait. The map’s orthophoto style gives it a distinctive character: aerial photographic detail is integrated with the disciplined language of topographic mapping, allowing natural forms and human infrastructure to appear together with striking clarity. Dark lake surfaces contrast with lighter wooded terrain, making the immense presence of Moosehead Lake both visually commanding and geographically precise.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map nearly a century of institutional expertise in measuring, classifying, and rendering the American landscape. By the 1970s, the USGS was combining traditional field survey methods with increasingly sophisticated aerial imagery, and this sheet reflects that transition beautifully. Rather than presenting the terrain only through conventional symbols and contour information, the orthophoto treatment anchors the map in the visible reality of the land itself. Roads, trails, shorelines, clearings, and landforms are shown with a level of detail especially valuable in a rugged, forested region. It is a map made not merely for orientation, but for close looking: a technical document with the visual richness of a landscape record.

Moosehead Lake dominates the composition, its irregular arms, coves, and islands forming the natural structure around which the surrounding region is organized. Long a celebrated destination for fishing, boating, hunting, and wilderness travel, the lake has also been an important resource landscape, connected to logging, transportation, and the outdoor culture of northern Maine. The map shows the lake not as an abstract blue shape, but as an intricate system of shorelines and passages, with smaller islands scattered across its waters. Nearby Greenville, positioned at the southern end of the lake, appears as a vital settlement and gateway to the Moosehead region, historically serving visitors, guides, sportsmen, and local industry.

The surrounding topography adds drama to the map’s quiet precision. Mount Kineo, rising prominently from the lake’s eastern side, is one of Moosehead’s defining landmarks, famed for its cliffs, views, and long association with Maine resort culture. Big Moose Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain contribute to the broader sense of relief and wilderness enclosure, while Little Moose Pond and Indian Pond extend the mapped landscape beyond the main lake into a network of water, forest, and upland terrain. Lily Bay State Park appears along the eastern shore, marking a recreational landscape shaped by camping, trails, boating access, and the enduring appeal of Maine’s North Woods.

As a historical document, “Moosehead” preserves the region at a particular moment in the late twentieth century, before subsequent decades of development, conservation planning, changing forestry practices, and recreational growth altered parts of the landscape. Its roads, pathways, potential resource zones, and woodland patterns offer a snapshot of how people moved through and used this remote area in the 1970s. Yet its deeper appeal lies in the balance between utility and atmosphere: the map is at once analytical and evocative, exacting and immersive. For collectors drawn to Maine, American topographic history, or the cartographic beauty of wild places, it is a compelling record of Moosehead Lake’s enduring geographic presence.

Cities, towns and places on this map

Moosehead Lake

Greenville

Mount Kineo

Big Moose Mountain

Little Moose Pond

Sugarloaf Mountain

Indian Pond

Lily Bay State Park

Moosehead Island / various small islands within the lake

Roads, pathways, and trails surrounding the lake

Woodland areas and potential resource zones

Historical context & cartographic details

Produced by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)

Historical 1:24,000 topographical map of Moosehead Lake in Maine and the surrounding area

Dated 1977, with a 1981 imprint

Uses an orthophoto style, integrating aerial photography with traditional mapping techniques

Shows elevations, depressions, wooded areas, landforms, roads, and other man-made features

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine and an important recreational area for fishing, hiking, and tourism

Captures the landscape and infrastructure of the area as it appeared in the late 20th century

Dark tones depict water bodies, contrasted with lighter areas representing vegetation and terrain

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map.
