gotfried-krueger-brewery-vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1886
Gotfried Krueger Brewery Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1886

Henry Jerome Schile’s Gotfried Kruger brewery, Newark, N.J., Bock beer, an 1886 lithograph, turns a brewery advertisement into an exuberant pageant of commerce, place and national identity. A broad-winged eagle rises above a globe marked “NEWARK”, gripping a foaming beer mug as an American flag billows alongside it. Beneath this improbable emblematic summit stands the red-brick brewery itself, while decorative lettering and a group of lively goats proclaim the seasonal attraction of bock beer.

Schile was a nineteenth-century American artist whose work crossed portraiture, illustration and advertising. This poster belongs to a period in which printed imagery was becoming increasingly central to the promotion of manufactured goods: a brewery could be represented not simply by its name or premises, but through an entire symbolic world. Bock, traditionally a stronger lager associated with seasonal release, also offered advertisers an irresistible visual pun. The German word Bock means a male goat, explaining the animals that caper through the composition and lend the commercial message its playful character.

A closer look

The design is organised as a steep ascent. At the bottom, the brewery forms a substantial architectural base, its rows of windows, doors and chimneys carefully articulated. Smoke drifts from the working complex, presenting production itself as part of the brand’s identity. The warm red and brown masonry contrasts with the cooler blue and green of the globe above, separating the tangible Newark premises from the poster’s more theatrical upper register.

Around the globe, Schile combines map-like shading with festive ornament. “NEWARK” appears prominently across its surface, making the city the visual centre of the enterprise rather than merely an address in the lower lettering. The flag folds across the upper left in rippling red, white and blue, while soft clouds temper the strongly coloured forms. On the right, three goats adopt distinct, animated poses; their movement breaks the composition’s formal symmetry and directs the eye back towards the large words “Bock Beer”.

The eagle provides the sharpest passage of close observation. Individual feathers are delineated across its extended wings, yet its silhouette remains bold enough to command the poster from a distance. The raised beer mug replaces the more solemn attributes commonly associated with heraldic eagles, producing an amusing collision between patriotic grandeur and convivial refreshment. Typography completes the hierarchy: ornate lettering announces “GOTFRIED KRUEGER”, the product name is enlarged into a decorative focal point, and the emphatic capitals of “BREWERY, NEWARK, N.J.” anchor the spectacle in a specific business and city.

Context and significance

Late nineteenth-century brewery advertising frequently drew upon both the German traditions of American brewing culture and the confident visual language of American industry. Here, those strands are woven together with unusual directness: goats evoke the beer’s German name, while the eagle, flag and Newark globe assert a firmly American setting. The brewery is consequently presented as local, industrious and ambitious all at once.

What distinguishes Schile’s design is the density of its visual argument. Architecture establishes credibility; lettering supplies immediate commercial information; animal humour makes the product memorable; and the globe and eagle amplify a Newark brewery into something almost cosmopolitan. The result is more than a record of a beverage brand: it is a vivid example of how nineteenth-century advertising used narrative, symbolism and typographic display to give industrial commerce a public personality.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
