fleschtau-vintage-advertising-poster-by-romeo-dumoulin-1923
Fleschtau Vintage Advertising Poster by Romeo Dumoulin, 1923

Romeo Dumoulin’s Fleschtau, Vieux Système Exquis, dated 1923, turns a beverage advertisement into a compact theatrical encounter. An elderly man in a dark cap occupies the left of the composition, his animated hands and bright expression answering the cheerful young woman who approaches from the right with a tray. Above them, the name “FLESCHTAU” is set in emphatic white lettering, while the accompanying phrase “VIEUX SYSTÈME EXQUIS” anchors the lower portion of the poster. Warm brown and muted yellow tones give the scene an intimate, convivial character, sharpened by crisp whites and small accents of cool blue.

Dumoulin was a Belgian artist associated with richly decorative graphic work and bold, immediately legible compositions. Here, ornament is secondary to human exchange: rather than presenting the advertised drink in isolation, he creates a miniature narrative of anticipation and approval. This approach belongs to a well-established tradition in commercial poster design, in which expressive figures made a product memorable by attaching it to sociability, appetite and everyday pleasure. The poster’s large lettering remains instantly readable, but it is the lively relationship between the two characters that supplies its persuasive energy.

A closer look

The scene is tightly cropped and shallow, bringing both figures close to the picture plane. On the left, the man’s white hair stands out strongly against his black cap and the subdued wall behind him. His face is articulated with fine lines around the eyes and mouth, while his raised fingers create a succession of small gestures across the centre of the composition. They suggest a response caught in progress—surprise, delight or eager recognition—without requiring a written exchange.

Opposite him, the young woman’s black dress and bright white apron form the poster’s strongest tonal contrast. The apron is not treated as a blank shape: fine linear details give its surface definition, while the dark clothing around it helps direct attention towards the tray. Its rim catches the light, as does a small, partially filled glass. These reflective touches concentrate the advertised promise into a few carefully chosen highlights. A round stand or dish in the lower foreground appears to hold a cake or dessert, broadening the scene from a simple serving moment into one of generous hospitality.

The background is deliberately quieter. A muted yellow-brown wall, lightly modulated rather than densely described, allows the figures and lettering to dominate. At the upper left, a partially visible sheet fixed to the wall introduces a casual note of everyday interior life, perhaps a notice or menu, though its text remains indistinct. The asymmetry is particularly effective: the man’s compact, animated form is balanced by the woman’s upright figure and extended tray, producing a visual movement from reaction to offering.

Context and significance

By the 1920s, poster advertising had developed a sophisticated visual shorthand in which image, typography and brand identity had to work at a glance. Fleschtau, Vieux Système Exquis demonstrates that principle without reducing its characters to mere symbols. Dumoulin gives the encounter enough observation—wrinkles, fabric details, fingers, reflections—to make it personable, while preserving the clarity required of commercial graphic art.

The result is both advertisement and character study. Its persuasive message resides not in elaborate explanation but in a glance, a gesture and the gleam of a glass: small details arranged around the expectation of something enjoyable about to be served.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
