This fascinating, fantastically detailed and very rare map of Negroland by British mapmaker Emanuel Bowen has significant historical value. It is shown here in its handcoloured form - it was handcoloured almost 300 years ago and has been wonderfully restored by The Unique Maps Co. It looks fantastic.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 80 inches (200cm) . Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (51x40.5cm) version of this map.
I also have this same map, but in its original monochrome form. Depending on your room’s aesthetic/decor, you might prefer this version.
This map shows West Africa after the great African empires had fallen, but before Europe had marched through and colonialised much of the continent. There is a small British presence in Guinea, and the effect of slavery is starting to show on the Gold Coast, Slave Coast and Tooth Coast (the original name for Ivory Coast!)
But for the most part this map shows West Africa back when it was ruled by the great independent Kingdoms of Benin, Judah, Tafilet (now Morocco and Algeria), Agades, Zanfara and Bito.
You might recognise a few nations that have survived to modern day, such as Niger and Sierra Leone, and a few major cities. But for the most part, very few modern African places can be seen on this map.
The map is covered in interesting notes and context. Take a look at the detailed images and read some of them - they add a lot of historical flavour that really set the scene of what West Africa was like in the 18th century.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from West Africa or who is interested in the slave trade.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
